Riley Smith. On February 8, 1936, the first pro football draft took place at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia. The first player chosen was Heisman Trophy winner Jay Berwanger from the University of Chicago. However, Berwanger never signed a contract with either the Eagles who selected him, or with the Bears, after they traded for his rights. Instead the first player drafted to actually play, was the number two pick - Alabama halfback Riley Smith.
