Nikolai Borchevski scored the winning goal 2:35 in the first overtime to eliminate the Detroit Red Wings, and send the Maple Leafs on to the next round.

Quebec won game two 4-1, and Montreal would win the next four games winning the series 4 games to 2. Montreal went on to win their next seven straight playoff games, including sweeping the Buffalo Sabres in the Wales Confrence semi-finals, and the first three games in the Wales Conference final over the New York Islanders. The Canadiens went on to win the series in five games. Montreal went on to win the Stanley Cup beating the Los Angeles Kings in five games.
