Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As fans mourned the death of Tony Congliaro, Cookie Lavagetto, and Nels Potter, the Cincinnati Reds won their fifth World Series by defeating the Oakland Athletics. Seasoned veteran outfielder Willie McGee of the A's batted only .200 in the series. What was strange about Willie in the season, was that he won which crown in 1990?

Answer: National League batting title

McGee played in 125 games for the Cardinals and earned enough at-bats with 501 to qualify for the batting title. He was then traded to the Athletics on August 29th in a three-for-one player trade. He batted .335 to runner-up Dodger Eddie Murray's .330 to win the batting title in the NL. McGee retired in 1999 after 18 seasons.
2. 1991 would supply some great rookies for baseball with names such as Jeff Bagwell, Andy Ashby, Derek Bell, Vinny Castilla, Chuck Knoblauch, Kenny Lofton, and Denny Neagle. For the first time in baseball history, 1991 also had a team go from worst to first. With baseball's poorest record in the 1990 season, this team went all the way to the World Series, but lost to the Minnesota Twins. Who was this Cinderella team in 1991?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

The other teams were all in the American League and could not have played the Twins. The Braves finished the 1990 season with a dismal 65-97 record, 26 games from the first place Reds. They turned it all around in 1991, finishing the season 94-68. Although the Braves had pitchers John Smoltz, Steve Avery, and Tom Glavine, they could not shutdown the Twins, losing four games to three.
3. The fans in 1992 watched the final season of Jack Clark, Rick Cerone, Brian Downing, and Willie Randoph. 1992 also saw a Pittsburgh Pirate win his second season MVP Award. The following season, he won it with a different team. Who was it?

Answer: Barry Bonds

The others had already retired. Bonds won his first MVP in 1990. After the 1992 season, Barry signed with the San Francisco Giants as a free agent, then won the MVP again in 1993. Bonds also won consecutive MVP Awards with the Giants from 2001-2004.
4. 1993 saw the Chicago White Sox with the season MVP in Frank Thomas, and the AL Cy Young winner, Jack McDowell. Fans also witnessed something for the first time in history. They saw a team finish the 1992 season with the best record in the American League, then finish with the worst record in the AL in 1993. Which team was this that had only one pitcher win more than 10 games, and only one starter hit over .300?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

In 1992, the A's finished out with a 96-66 season. They followed it up with the worst in 1993, going 68-94. Bobby Witt was their big winning pitcher, being victorious 14 times, but also lost 13 games in the process. Rickey Henderson batted .327 in the season.
5. Baseball fans mourned throughout the 1994 season. They lost Pirate great Harvey Haddix who died in January, and Allie Reynolds, Cesar Tovar, and pitcher Eric Show. Why else did fans mourn the season?

Answer: A strike ended the season

For the first time since professional baseball began in 1871, the season would end with no declared champion as no World Series would take place. The strike began on August 12th, and that was the end of that. While the Yankees stopped at 70-43 in the AL East, the AL West did not have a team with a .500 record. The first place Rangers were 52-62.
6. 1995 saw a first in history. The Cleveland Indians were led by Albert Belle, Manny Ramirez, and Jim Thome with their bats. Their arms consisted of Charles Nagy, Orel Hershiser, and Dennis Martinez. What did their team do for the first time in history?

Answer: Won 100 games in a season of less than 154 games

The only major award for an Indian that season was Kenny Lofton winning a Gold Glove. Their pitching staff didn't have anyone win more than 17 games. Cleveland's bats totaled 207 home runs in the season. The 1995 season started late with residual from the 1994 strike.

The Indians finished the shortened season with a record of 100-44, then went on to lose to the Braves in the World Series.
7. 1996 was full of firsts. Alex Rodriguez of the Mariners became the first shortstop in 52 years to win a batting title. Mark McGwire of the A's was the first player to hit 50 home runs with less than 400 at-bats in a season. The first Major League game in history not played in the U.S. or Canada was played in Mexico. And finally, the 1996 Detroit Tigers dismally set a new American League record for the highest team ERA in a season with 6.38. The Tigers had 28-year old Omar Olivares, who led the team with wins. How many games did Omar win in 1996?

Answer: 7

The Tigers had a dismal season, going 53-109. They would later lower that mark by winning only 43 in 2003. Olivares won seven games for the Detroit but also lost 11. Felipe Lira was the only Tiger pitcher who threw over 100 strikeouts.
8. In 1997, baseball lost Bob Cain, Dolph Camilli, Curt Flood, and Johnny Vander Meer. Also in the year, Mark McGwire became the first player in history to hit the most home runs in the Majors, but not win this batting title. Why was he not awarded this?

Answer: He was traded mid-season to another league

In Mark's 12th season with the Athletics, they traded him to the Cardinals after 105 games into the season. Oakland in the trade received Eric Ludwig, TJ Mathews, and Blake Stein. Before leaving the Athletics, McGwire smacked 34 American League home runs, then finished the season with the Cardinals, hitting another 24 for a total of 58. Larry Walker (Rockies) took the National League crown with his 49, and Ken Griffey Jr. (Seattle) took the AL crown with 56 of his own.
9. 1998 fans saw Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs in a season. They also watched Alex Rodriguez be the first infielder to ever hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in a season. Which team benefited from Alex in 1998?

Answer: Seattle Mariners

In 1998, Rodriguez was in his fourth of six seasons with Seattle, and hit 42 home runs along with 46 stolen bases. He went to the Rangers in 2002, then the Yankees in 2004.
10. The decade ended with the loss of some true baseball greats. Joe Adcock, Joe DiMaggio, Catfish Hunter, and Early Wynn, were some who died in 1999. 1999 also ended with a pitcher winning his second Cy Young Award, and the first of four consecutive Cy Young Awards. Who was this National League pitcher?

Answer: Randy Johnson

The others were all American League pitchers in 1999. Randy, who had already won a Cy Young Award in 1995 with Seattle, won this one with the Diamondbacks of Arizona. He would go on to win four consecutive, then give way to Eric Gagne of the Dodgers in 2003.
