Fun Trivia: J : Jacksonville Jaguars

Special Sub-Topic: All About The Jaguars

What year did the Jacksonville Jaguars enter the NFL as an expansion team?

1995. There had been no additions to the league since the Seahawks and Buccaneers were added in 1976. Some thought Jacksonville was a long shot since they would make the third NFL team in Florida, Miami and Tampa being the other two, but they made the cut.

What other club entered the NFL as an expansion team the same year as the Jaguars?
Carolina Panthers. Seeing that 1976 was the last time new teams were added (Seahawks and Buccaneers), and with both college and pro football more popular than ever, the league felt like it was time to expand. It only makes sense to keep the conferences even, so two teams were added.

What are the team colors?
Teal, black, gold, white. At first, the colors were to be teal, black, silver and gold but the jaguar logo closely resembled the Jaguar car's hood ornament made by Ford Motor Company so the look was changed, without lawsuits and going to trial. Jaguar became the offical car of the team and the logo was changed to an angry looking jaguar head with gold instead of silver.

What was the name of the first stadium the Jaguars called home?
Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. Originally called Fairfield Stadium, the Gator Bowl Stadium was demolished and that site was used to build the Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville is where the Gator Bowl was held the one year that the Municipal Stadium was being built. The Jacksonville Municipal Stadium is home to the Jaguars and to the annual Gator Bowl.

Who was the inaugural coach of the Jaguars?
Tom Coughlin. Tom Coughlin was head coach for eight seasons with the Jaguars. He finished with a regular season record of 68-60. After being fired from the Jaguars, he took a year off before taking the head coaching job with the Giants.

In what season did the Jaguars make the playoffs for the first time?
2nd. The Jaguars finished 2nd in the AFC Central with a regular season record of 9-6. They went to the playoffs and made it to the Conference Championship only to lose to the Patriots 20-6.

In how many consecutive seasons did the Jaguars make the playoffs in their first five years in the league?
    4. The Jaguars made it to the playoffs four out of their first five seasons: 1996-97-98-99. They made it to the Conference Championships twice (1996 and 1999)but lost both times, once to the Patriots 20-6 in 1996, and to the Titans 33-14 in 1999.

In the Jaguars first NFL draft, who did they chose with their first-ever pick?
Tony Boselli. All four listed players were drafted in the NFL draft by the Jaguars in this order: Boselli, Stewart, DeMarco and Schwartz. Boselli was an offensive tackle out of USC.

The Jaguars chose Steve Beuerlien, QB from the Arizona Cardinals, as their first pick in the expansion draft, but who became the star quarterback in their first season?
Mark Brunell. Being an expansion team, the Jaguars had to build an entire roster with the NFL draft and an expansion draft. They traded for Brunell from the Green Bay Packers for a third round and a fifth round draft pick in the same year. He started 13 games for the Jaguars. Johnson was a back-up QB, DeMarco a tackle and Schwarz a linebacker for the Jaguars the inaugural season.

What college did 2003 NFL draft pick Byron Leftwich attend?
Marshall University. Byron was a QB out of Marshall. He was the first-round, seventh overall pick of the 2003 draft by the Jaguars.
