Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the Philadelphia Eagles first season in the NFL?

Answer: 1933

The Eagles were an expansion team in 1933. They took the slot of the Frankford Yellow Jackets, a team that folded in 1931. The league considered the Eagles an expansion team and not a continuation of the Yellow Jackets, so none of the Jackets history is a historical part of the Eagles. Therefore, the first year of Eagles history begins with the 1933 season.
2. For the one season that the Eagles merged with the Pittsburgh Steelers, what was the team name?

Answer: Steagles

Due to World War II, both teams had roster shortages. For only the 1943 season, the teams merged and were known as the Phil-Pitt Steagles.
3. Where did the Eagles first call home?

Answer: Baker Bowl

The Baker Bowl was home for the Eagles their first three seasons in the NFL. It was primarily home for the Philadelphia Phillies, so when the Eagles began playing there, it made the Baker Bowl one of the first multi-sport stadiums.
4. Who was the original owner of the Eagles?

Answer: Wray and Bell

Lud Wray and Bert Bell headed a syndicate that purchased the team. Wray and Bell were former University of Pennsylvania teammates. Their first rosters were mainly made up of former Temple, Penn, and Villanova players.
5. The NFL draft of college players was first introduced to the NFL by the Eagles General Manager Bert Bell.

Answer: True

In 1935, General Manager Bert Bell proposed the collegiate draft to the league in hopes to give all teams a chance at an equal playing field of talent. The draft allows for teams to choose players in inverse fashion based on their season's finishing standings. That concept still is a huge part of the NFL today.
6. The Eagles did not finish with a winning record in any of their first ten seasons.

Answer: True

The closest the Eagles came to a winning season in their first 10 seasons was 5-6.
7. What was the first decade of the Eagles to show championship success?

Answer: 1940s

The 1940s saw the Eagles go to three NFL Championship games for the 1947, 1948 and 1949 seasons.
8. What was the win-loss record of their first three NFL Championsip games for the Eagles?

Answer: 2-1

Eagles 21-Cardinals 28, Eagles 7-Cardinals 0, and Eagles 14-Rams 0.
9. In the 1940s, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles swapped franchises.

Answer: True

Art Rooney sold the Steelers to Alexis Thompson, then Art purchased part of the Eagles. So prior to the swap, Art Rooney and Bert Bell owned the Eagles, and Alexis Thompson owned the Steelers. They swapped everything in the franchise leaving only the team nicknames in the original city.

In essence, Rooney and Bell moved their entire Eagles organization to Pittsburgh taking on the Steelers name, and Thompson moved his entire Steelers organization to Philadelphia taking on the Eagles name. Because the NFL franchises are not corporate entities and were territorial, the NFL didn't consider these to be franchise moves, so team histories remain fluid.
10. What is the Eagles "Happy Hundred"?

Answer: The group of 100 owners

1949 saw the Eagles owner sell the franchise to the "Happy Hundred", which was a group of 100 buyers. Each buyer purchased a share of the team.
