    Old English Sheepdog. This dog earned the name 'Bobtail' from its docked or 'bobbed' tail.

    Golden Retriever. Although the Golden Retriever originated in Great Britain, some people think that its ancestors were Russian circus dogs. This theory gives it the name Russian Retriever.

Aberdeen Terrier
    Scottish Terrier. The name "Aberdeen Terrier" comes from a city in Scotland where the breed originated. Scottish Terrier comes from the country where the breed originated.

St. Hubert's Hound
    Bloodhound. It is called a 'Bloodhound' because it can pick up the scent of an animal or animal's blood that was left up to two weeks prior. This quality makes the breed popular in court cases involving missing people.

    Mexican Hairless. The dog is more commonly known as the Mexican Hairless because of its origin and appearance. The dog is hairless, except for a little fluff on its head and tail.

    Lowchen. "Little Lion Dog" comes from the way some people shave the dog for shows. Little fluffs are left on the end of the tail, around the ankles, the front part of the body, and the head. This gives the dog a lion-like appearance.

Esquimaux
    Eskimo Dog. "The Eskimo Dog" came from the people who first used this breed for pulling sleds.

Brushwood Dog
    Shiba Inu. Called this because its original use in Japan was to chase small game through brush. It’s also called the Japanese Small-size Dog for its place of origin and small size.

African Lion Hound
    Rhodesian Ridgeback. The Rhodesian Ridgeback originated in South Africa where it was used to hunt lions, earning it the name African Lion Hound.

Red Setter
    Irish Setter. It's easy to see where this dog got both names. Irish Setter because it originated in Ireland, and Red Setter because of its bright red color.

Wolf Spitz
    Keeshond. Called the "Wolf Spitz" from its Spitz-like form (small body, curved tail) and its wolf-like coloring and appearance. It got the name Keeshond from a man whose nickname was Kees.

English Toy Spaniel
    King Charles Spaniel. It was called the King Charles Spaniel because it was favored by King Charles II of England.

Congo Dog
    Basenji. This dog was used to hunt in the Congo (it originated in Zaire), so it was called the Congo Dog. It earned the name "Basenji" from a show in England in 1937 when the owner called it "basenji", an African word meaning "brush thing".

Chrysanthemum Dog
    Shih Tzu. It is called "Chrysanthemum Dog" because its face was described as similar to a chrysanthemum flower.
