    nouns. An adjective provides information about a noun (a person, place, or thing). Adverbs provide information about verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.

    articles. "A" and "an" are indefinite articles used to identify ANY item. For example, if a girl says, "I am going to sit in a chair," she does not care which chair she sits in.

Which word in the following sentence is an adjective? "The cool breeze blew across my face."
    cool. "Cool" is the adjective because it describes "breeze." "Breeze" is a noun. "Blew" is a verb. "Across" is a preposition.

Which word in the following sentence is an adjective? "Firefighters save lives."
    This sentence has no adjectives.. None of the words in this sentence is an adjective. "Firefighters" and "lives" are nouns, and "save" is a verb.

Which word in the following sentence is an adjective? "The brown dog ran down the street."
    brown. The adjective "brown" tells us what kind of "dog" is in the sentence. Both "dog" and "street" are nouns. The verb is "ran."

Which of these words can be used as an adjective?
    purple. "Purple" is the adjective because it is a word that can be used to describe a noun ("purple grapes"). "Built" is a past tense verb ("Caesar built an empire."). "Under" is a preposition ("under the porch"), and "wonderfully" is usually used an adverb ("He performed wonderfully in the recital.").

Which of these words can be used as an adjective?
    beautiful. "Beautiful" is the adjective because it is a word that can be used to describe a noun ("beautiful doll"). "Dig" can be used as a verb ("I will dig in the sand.") or as a noun ("The archeological dig is in Egypt."). "In" is a preposition ("in the car"), and "quickly" is an adverb ("She ran quickly.").

How many adjectives are in this sentence? "Birds fly overhead."
    0. "Birds" is a noun. "Fly" is a verb. "Overhead" is an adverb which tells where the birds are flying.

How many adjectives are in this sentence? "Twinkling, bright stars shine overhead."
    2. To find the adjectives, first find any nouns. The noun is "stars." To find the adjectives, ask "What kind of stars?" -- "twinkling" (twinkling stars) and "bright" (bright stars). "Shine" is a verb; it tells what the stars are doing. "Overhead" is an adverb which tells where the stars are shining.

Other than the word "a," how many adjectives are in this sentence? "Rickety houses teeter near a bottomless pit."
    2. To find the adjectives, first find the nouns. The nouns are "houses" and "pit." To find the adjectives, first ask, "What kind of houses?" -- "rickety" (rickety houses). Then ask, "What kind of pit?" which results in "bottomless" (bottomless pit).
