Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. OK, you want to start out with the main instrument in most rock bands: a guitar. The company that made the guitar you want is partially famous for the fact that Mike Nesmith played one in The Monkees and the company was a pioneer in electric guitars. What do you want?

Answer: A Gretsch electric-acoustic

Mike Nesmith used a white Gretsch electric-acoustic guitar for most of his Monkees records on which he played guitar. National Steel guitars are constructed of metal and have resonators inside. Danelectros have built in sound effects and Fenders have a sleek look and great sound.
2. Next comes 1/3 of the rhythm section: a bass guitar. Brian Wilson or Carol Kaye played this kind of bass on most Beach Boys records. It has a very distinctive sound. What bass is this?

Answer: Fender bass

The Fender bass was doubled up on a lot of Beach Boys records with Lyle Ritz's string bass, maybe a Suzuki, I don't know! Danelectros have effects as stated in the previous question and Yamaha basses are just regular basses.
3. Next is the synthesizer. You want those wild and crazy sounds on the songs you will record, but you have no idea how to program a synthesizer! You'd prefer something like the one Andy Paley played on Brian Wilson's "Pet Sounds Live in London" tour. What do you want?

Answer: Yamaha Motif

The Yamaha Motif is labeled as a "music production synthesizer" and has very realistic piano sounds and very weird synth sounds! The Roland V-Synth is one of the most complicated synths on today's market, allowing you to use laser beams and physical pads to switch speed/sound direction and produce weird programs.

The DX7-II comes from the 1980's and has a sort of electric piano sound. The Kurzweil K-2600 was also used on Wilson's shows, but by Darian Sahanaja, not Andy Paley.
4. Drums are next. You prefer the sound of real drums to drum programming. You want the drums that Triumph used "exclusively" on some of their albums. What kind do you need?

Answer: Tama

Tama makes high-quality neat sounding drums. Pearl drums are probably the most used drums today, with one example of a Pearl player being Mitch Dorge of the Crash Test Dummies. Taye makes the GoKit, which looks extremely weird but sounds just like regular drums. Peavey is a new company that only makes the International Series II drum kit.
5. Now what about some hand percussion? You think Bermuda Schwartz is the greatest hand percussionist in the WORLD, and you want the percussion he uses. What kind of percussion do you want?

Answer: Rhythm Tech

Bermuda Schwartz is Weird Al's drummer and percussionist and he plays Impact drums with Rhythm Tech percussion. Empire made tambourines and Remo makes every kind of percussion or head from African djembes to banjo heads.
6. The one thing about your synthesizer is that it doesn't have good organ sounds. You need a real organ for that kind of thing. The organ you want is made in Italy and was used by Elton John on "Crocodile Rock." What do you need?

Answer: Farfisa

Farfisa organs have a very nasally, high pitched sound. Hammond organs are the kind you might hear on black soul or gospel. Korg and Roland make organ synthesizers that are quite common today.
7. Although you don't like programmed drums that much, you want a set of drum pads because they can do really weird things. You want the kind keyboardist Kipper used when he programs drums for Sting's live shows. What is it you're going for?

Answer: Kat dk10

The Kat dk10 has 8 pads and can be hooked into a computer. The Boss DR-3 belongs to the Dr. Rhythm series and has a series of set rhythm section pieces. The Yamaha RY9 is along the same lines of the DR-3, and the Korg ERmkII is mostly for DJs that want crazy flexible programmed drums.
8. The cymbals that came with your drum set are truly no good, so you buy new cymbals. The kind you want is made in New Brunswick, Canada, and is used by many major drummers today. What cymbals do you desire?

Answer: Sabian

Sabian are generally referred to as some of the best cymbals in the world and come in different varieties like the Chinese gong cymbal. Paiste and Zildijan are used by their share of artists, and Headliner basically specializes in crash cymbals.
9. It's time to record your music, and you want something flexible enough to accomodate all your instruments. Ideally you want something with more than 10 tracks. Which of the following would not suit your tastes?

Answer: Korg CR-4

The answer can be found in the code numbers: A Korg CR-4 is a 4 track cassette recorder, tke Korg 1200mkII and Korg 1600mkII are digital recorders with 12 and 16 tracks, respectively, and the Korg D32XD is a 32 track extended digital recorder.
10. Finally, the microphones. You admire the tonal quality of the mic that Brian Wilson used for his vocal on his "Pet Sounds" album, and you want one of them. What do you need?

Answer: Shure mics

The mic used for Brian's vocal was, according to engineer Chuck Britz, a "cheap little Shure 747... I put a filter on it." DPA, Sennheiser and Neumann were not used for "Pet Sounds" vocals. That's it. Hope you liked playing "Be Your Own Band!"
