    Bourges. Berthe Morisot was born on January 14, 1841, in Bourges, France. Her family was quite well-off, and her father, Edme Tiburce Morisot, was a high-ranking civil servant.

    Edma & Yves. Berthe and Edma showed talent in drawing, and in 1855, Morisot's mother decided to further their knowledge of art.

Who was Morisot's FIRST art teacher?
    Geoffrey-Alphonse Chocarne. Chocarne, an advocate of neo-classicism, taught the girls briefly and almost bored them away from art entirely.

Who was Morisot's SECOND art teacher?
    Joseph Guichard. His interest in Romanticism and penchant for teaching new students allowed the girls to begin their artistic growth. He had them make drawings from casts of classical sculptures and took them to the Louvre to copy old master works. Berthe focused on the works of the Veronese. Guichard recognized the girls' immense talent and even wrote a letter to the Morisots' mother warning her of the implications of having her upper-class daughters becoming painters.

    Achille Oudinot. The girls wanted to paint en plein air, so Guichard turned them over to Oudinot, who quickly turned Berthe and Edma over to Camille Corot.
