Fun Trivia: O : One Hit Wonders

Special Sub-Topic: Bet You Can't Have Just One!

The Grateful Dead have left a long legacy behind them. Which song of theirs hit #9 on the Billboard Hot 100?

Touch of Grey. "Touch of Grey" was the only song of theirs that charted higher than #60. "Truckin'" hit #64, "Alabama Getaway" hit #68, and "Shakedown Street" didn't even chart.

Iggy Pop is well-known for being the lead singer of The Stooges, but his only hit peaked at #28. Which one?
Candy. Not a single one of Iggy's other songs even cracked the Hot 100, let alone the Top 40. This song hit the charts in 1990 and is said to be about Iggy's teenage girlfriend, Betsy.

Jimi Hendrix is viewed today as one of sixties rock's greatest guitarists, but what was the only song of his that managed to hit the Billboard Top 40?
All Along the Watchtower. "All Along the Watchtower", a cover of a Bob Dylan classic, achieved moderate success, peaking at #20 on the Billboard charts. "Purple Haze" only reached #65, while "The Wind Cries Mary" and "Hey Joe" never charted.

Randy Newman has written a number of songs for films and for other artists; he has also released a few songs of his own. Which one climbed all the way to the #2 spot on the Billboard charts?
Short People. "Short People" was met with considerable controversy, as it was viewed as derogatory towards the less-than-tall. In reality, it was just the opposite, written as a song against heightism. Among other songs of his, "It's Money That Matters" did top the Mainstream Rock charts, but it only managed to reach #60 on the Billboard Hot 100. "The Blues" charted a little higher, reaching #51. A lesser-known song, "Rider in the Rain", only managed #78 on the Country Singles charts.

Randy Newman is sort of a double one-hit wonder; not only did he chart with a song that he released, but he has also charted with only one song that he wrote for another musical act. Which artist or band took one of his songs all the way to #1?
Three Dog Night. Three Dog Night topped the charts for two weeks in July of 1970 with "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)". When Wilson Pickett covered it two years later, though, they only managed to reach #99 on the Hot 100. Dusty Springfield's "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore" didn't even crack the Hot 100, only hitting #105. "Living Without You" was sung by Manfred Mann's Earth Band, and it peaked at #69. "I Think It's Going to Rain Today" didn't chart when UB40 sang it in 1980, nor did it when Tom Northcott released it ten years earlier.

Korn is popular among the alternative rock crowd. This may be the reason why they have only managed a #38 song on the Billboard charts. What song is this?
Did My Time. "Did My Time" was written and recorded for the 2003 film "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life". "Twisted Transistor" is their second-highest-charting song to date, hitting #64. "Freak on a Leash" bubbled under at #106 when first released in 1999 and managed to hit a little higher at #89 when re-released as part of "MTV Unplugged" in 2007. "Word Up!", a rock cover of the R&B standard by Cameo, did even worse, only reaching #123.

Jack Johnson has become rather popular among soft rock fans over the past few years. However, his only hit barely cracked the Top 40, reaching #38. Can you name it?
Upside Down. "Upside Down" was recorded in 2006 for the film "Curious George". Another well-known song of his, "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing", only hit #66.

Here's one for all you country music fans: Trisha Yearwood. Which song of hers got to #23 on the Billboard Hot 100?
How Do I Live. While all of the incorrect answers took the top spot on the Hot Country Songs chart, "How Do I Live" could only manage #2. It was written for LeAnn Rimes to sing on the soundtrack to the 1997 film "Con Air", but Rimes' version was rejected for sounding too much like a pop song, and Yearwood's version was used instead. Shortly after Yearwood's version was released, Rimes released her own, which peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the charts for a record sixty-nine weeks. "She's in Love with the Boy", Yearwood's debut single, didn't chart on the Hot 100, while "XXX's and OOO's (An American Girl)" and "Thinkin' About You" bubbled under at #114 and #120, respectively.

Garth Brooks, another famous country music artist, has been married to Trisha Yearwood since 2005. Which of these songs climbed all the way to #5 on the Billboard charts?
Lost in You. Technically, this song was released by Chris Gaines, which was Garth Brooks' alter ego created for the 1999 film "The Lamb". All of Gaines' songs had a much more alternative feel to them; this angered many fans of his usual country singer persona, which is probably why "Lost in You" only reached #62 on the Hot Country Songs chart. "Friends in Low Places" and "The Thunder Rolls" both topped the country charts, while "Standing Outside the Fire" hit #3, but none of them came close to charting on the Billboard Hot 100.

Moving back onto the alternative rock scene, Yellowcard could only manage a #37 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their highest-charting song. Which one?
Ocean Avenue. While their only other song that charted on the Hot 100 was "Lights and Sounds" (#50), it did reach #4 on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. "Ocean Avenue" only reached #21, while "Only One" and "Way Away", neither of which hit the Hot 100, peaked at #15 and #25 on the Modern Rock charts, respectively.
