Special Sub-Topic: Bootiful's Top 10 Chick Flicks of All Time
Ok, so you've just had the worst day ever. The photocopier wouldn't work, your clothes won't fit and you missed the bus, amongst other things. You flip on the television and discover that the movie channel is running an all-night, chick flick, movie marathon. The first movie shows a man and a woman typing e-mails to each other. Of course, what neither of them knows is that in everyday life they are business rivals, at heads over his new bookstore. Starring Meg Ryan and that guy from "Forrest Gump," what movie are you watching?
You've Got Mail. This is one of my favourite movies! It stars Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks and Greg Kinnear. It is loosely based around the 1940 movie, "Shop Around the Corner," which was about a man and woman who communicated through letters.
Okay, so you're starting to feel a bit better. But you're still upset about the way your boss yelled at you. So you decide to keep watching. The next film seems a bit older. It is about a man who moves into the apartment below a beautiful woman with an affinity for eating her morning meals outside a jewellery store. Starring Audrey Hepburn, what are you watching?
Breakfast At Tiffany's. "Breakfast At Tiffany's" also starred George Peppard and Mickey Rooney and was originally set to star Marilyn Monroe instead of Audrey Hepburn.
So the layers of stress and upset are slowly starting to fall away, but you think that you're going to have to watch a bit more of this chick flick phenomena. The next movie looks to be set around the American Civil War and follows the lives of four sisters, one who has a knack for writing. It stars that girl who was in "Edward Scissorhands" and "The Crucible". What movie are you watching?
Little Women. This 1994 film of Louisa May Alcott's book is just one of the many adaptations and stars Winona Ryder, Samantha Mathis, Kirsten Dunst and Claire Danes as the March sisters.
Okay quickly now, before the next movie starts, go and fill up your popcorn bowl and ring your friends and tell them to come over for a girlie session. This next movie is in black and white. It's about two musicians on the run from gangsters. In desperation they disguise themselves as women and join a female band. It stars the father of Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Lemmon. What movie are you watching?
Some Like It Hot. It stars Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe, though these parts were originally intended for Danny Kaye, Bob Hope and Mitzi Gaynor.
So, now your friends are over and it seems that you aren't the only one in need of the satisfaction that you get from a good (or even a bad) chick-flick. Sally just got dumped and Kiki got fired! So, as a group you decide to keep watching. This next one stars the woman from "Double Jeopardy", and the guy who was in "X-Men". It is about a woman who, after she gets dumped, pretends to be a doctor who compares men to cows. What movie are you watching?
Someone Like You.... "Someone Like You..." stars Ashley Judd, Hugh Jackman, Marissa Tomei and Greg Kinnear and was based on the book "Animal Husbandry" by Laura Zigman. It is also called "Animal Attraction" in the UK.
You're really starting to enjoy this chick-flick marathon, and that's a good thing too, because you've still got five more movies to watch! This next one is about an Englishman with floppy hair who literally bumps into, and then falls in love with a famous actress named Anna Scott. It stars Julia Roberts and that guy who's in all the romantic comedies. What movie are you watching?
Notting Hill. The 1999 romantic comedy starred Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant and Rhys Ifans. This is a great movie.
So, how are you feeling? Just to be sure though, you should probably keep watching. The next movie is about 'two little girls from Little Rock'. It shows how two lounge singers, Lorelei and Dorothy, find love. Lorelei is engaged to a rich geek and Dorothy is cynical. A string of funny tales follow when Lorelei and Dorothy are on the same ship as a old millionaire, the entire men's Olympic rowing team, and a private spy intent on exposing Lorelei as a gold-digger. Starring Marilyn Monroe, what movie are you watching?
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" stars Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell and features the famous song, "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend".
Wow, the stress is really falling away! Ooh, this next movie looks good. It is set at Christmas time and shows the ways that love affects a large group of people. It stars Hugh Grant, that guy that Bridget Jones ends up with, and the actor that starred in all three of the "Harry Potter" movies. What 2003 movie are you watching?
Love Actually. "Love Actually" stars Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley, Bill Nighy, Liam Neeson and Alan Rickman. Claudia Schiffer also had a one-minute cameo, for which she received a reported £200,000 sterling.
This is turning out to be one of the best days of your life - fatty foods, good friends and great entertainment! The next movie revolves around the way that the circle of life effects six Southern women. It starts with the wedding of Shelby and continues through to the birth of her son. When a tragedy occurs, the women must draw together and rely on each others' strengths. Starring Julia Roberts and Sally Field, what movie are you watching?
Steel Magnolias. "Steel Magnolias" starred Sally Field, Olymia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Shirley Maclaine and Daryl Hannah. An interesting fact - Winona Ryder was considered for the role of Shelby.
So, you're feeling much better now, but what's the harm in watching one more movie? It seems that the movie channel has left the most classic of all romantic classics for last. This movie features a boy who, after his mother's death, rings up a radio show to help his father. When Annie hears him on the radio, she becomes intrigued and then the love story to end all love stories begins. Starring Tom Hanks and the actor from "Hanging Up" and "IQ", what movie are you watching?
Sleepless In Seattle. Ah, the classic romantic comedy pair! I hope you're feeling better after the chick-flick movie marathon!
