Special Sub-Topic: Channel Surfing

I switch on the "boob tube" and start flipping through the channels. I stop at Comedy Central. There are puppets making phony phone calls on. What is the name of this show?

Crank Yankers. These puppets live in the imaginary town of "Yankerville" and are the brainchild of Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Corolla. They had another show on Comedy Central called "The Man Show." The crank calls are real and are just being reenacted by the puppets featuring celebrity voices such as Gilbert Gottfried, Sarah Silverman, and Wanda Sykes.

I want to watch something more educational and start channel surfing again. I put on The Discovery Channel to find an Australian man named Steve and his wife Terry climbing into a pit with Komodo dragons. "Crikey!" What is the name of this show?
The Crocodile Hunter & Crocodile Hunter & Croc Hunter & The Croc Hunter & Croc Hunter Diaries &The Croc Files. The famous crocodile hunter is none other than Steve Irwin, son of Bob and Lyn Irwin, who owned "Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park." Steve learned a lot about reptiles as a child and passes his knowledge to TV viewers on both The Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. He married an American girl named Terry Raines who had plenty of experience nursing mammals back in Oregon. The couple has not only found success with their television program, but also has released a hit movie and are the directors of the Australia Zoo in Queensland, Australia as well.

Next, I put on one of my favorite shows, "Trading Spaces". On what channel would you find this show in its origin?
The Learning Channel. Both "Trading Spaces" and its spin-off, "While You Were Out" were found on The Learning Channel or TLC. There were several copycat shows and a poll in 2002, mistakenly voted "Trading Spaces" as the best show on Home and Garden Television or HGTV. There is a show called "Designing for the Sexes" on HGTV, but its ratings are nowhere near that of "Trading Spaces". Some of the hosts include Amy Wynn-Pastor, Ty Pennington, and Genevieve Gorder. They assist two real couples to decorate their neighbor's house and vice-versa.

Next, I decide to put on MTV to hear some music. However, there are no videos being played. Instead, there is some show about a whole bunch of twenty year olds living in a house together and they have agreed to have their lives taped. What is the name of this show?
The Real World. "The Real World" was a precursor for many of the reality-based television shows that are on TV today. The first season was filmed out of New York and since, there have been 10 more "Real Worlds" in cities such as San Francisco, London, Boston, and Las Vegas. "Road Rules" is an offshoot of "The Real World", where people get into a Winnebago and travel around, instead of living day-to-day in a house. Many of the people from these shows have come back for competitions such as "Battle of the Sexes". "Big Brother" is on the BBC in the UK (United Kingdom).

It is getting late and I want to watch something nostalgic before I hit the hay. Where would I find re-runs of classic shows such as "Three's Company", "The Cosby Show", and "Family Ties?"
TV Land. Nickelodeon, which is a children's television network, turns into what was once knows as Nick at Nite and features "TV Land", where you can watch many shows from the 1970's, 80's, and 90's. The transition from Nickelodeon to TV Land usually takes place at 9:00 PM EST.

I fall asleep with the television on. I wake up to see an infomercial for "Winsor Pilates." Who is the celebrity that is the spokesperson for this exercise program?
Daisy Fuentes. If you are ever up late and are flipping through the channels, you will find quite a few infomercials. Several of them are for exercise equipment or programs. "Pilates" is one of the most recognized programs and has quite a few celebrity endorsements. The host of the infomercial for "Winsor Pilates" is Daisy Fuentes.

I cannot sleep so I might as well keep flipping through the channels. I see an interesting show on E! that details the entire life of Jim Carrey. It is formatted like a short documentary. What is the name of this show?
E! True Hollywood Story. The pioneer for these types of shows was on VH1 and was called "Behind the Music." It let the casual television viewer see what singers and bands did off-camera. As with any successful show, there were many copycats. E! stands for Entertainment Television and their version of this is "The E! True Hollywood Story." It has been nominated for an Emmy and is very well done. "Revealed" is a one on one interview with Jules Asner, the show's host.

I cannot seem to find anything on until I get to a show where Hillary Duff stars as "Lizzie McGuire". This the same show as "Even Stevens."
    f. The channel we landed on is The Disney Channel and "Lizzie McGuire" is one of its biggest hit shows. It has even made the leap to the big screen in "The Lizzie McGuire Movie." It is not the same show as "Even Stevens" however, which is a show about a family in Sacramento. Both are part of Disney's "Zoog Weekendz" lineup.

Finally, I relent and turn on the movie channels. I cannot find anything to watch on HBO, The Movie Channel, or Cinemax. Which of the following is not an option to watch movies on?
The Food Network. Showtime is famous for its boxing as well as several original shows such as, "Queer as Folk". Of course, Showtime's main staple is the airing of hit movies once they become ready for cable. Starz is another channel that has hit movies and AMC stands for American Movie Classics and you can catch some true classics on there.

I shut off the television and attempt to go to sleep. I am reminded of a song called "57 Channels and Nothing On." Who sings this song?
Bruce Springsteen. "The Boss" came out with this song in 1992 and it seems as if not much has changed since then. This is the end of my channel surfing experience. I hoped you enjoyed it. I really need to get myself a new remote control!
