R & republican & republicans. The Republicans want people to have more control over their own money while Democrats, in general, want higher taxes in order to provide for more government programs.

Healthcare should be the responsibility of the government.

D & democrat & democrats. Republicans frequently stress individual responsibility while Democrats stress societal responsibility.

Promote affirmative action.

D & democrat & democrats. Again, Democrats wish to promote societal gains whereas Republicans generally focus more on individual gains. Affirmative action doesn't look at the individual, just the social group they are a part of.

Favours limits on campaign contributions from individuals.

D & democrat & democrats. That's because the Republicans generally raise more money from individuals than Democrats.

Favours increasing military expenditures.

R & republican & republicans. Which is odd, considering they want to decrease taxes. One way to remember the difference between the two parties is that the Republicans want the largest and best military but don't want to send them anywhere, while the Democrats want a small military and want to send them everywhere. This was primarily said during Clinton's presidency as he sent many troops overseas for peacekeeping missions - a role the US military had not really filled previously.

When compared, which party is more apt to support a woman's right to choose?

D & democrat & democrats. Republicans generally stress moral values which are more in line with fundamental Christian beliefs.

In comparison to the other party, this party would like to see longer jail terms and stiffer penalties for those convicted of drug-related offenses.

R & republican & republicans. Democrats are more apt to want to rehabilitate.

This party normally opposes gun control.

R & republican & republicans. Perhaps because of large NRA contributions and lobbying. The Democratic party is more apt to want more governmental control and legislation. Republicans stress individual responsibility with gun control - that each person has the general right to bear arms unless they've proven otherwise.

'Don't ask, don't tell' in relation to gay rights should be changed because it's discriminatory.

D & democrat & democrats. Even though it has been Clinton's policy, many Democrats want this changed so that homosexuals can serve openly. Republican candidates are most likely to want to keep the policy as it is.

In general, this party opposes free trade and would be more likely than the other party to say 'Buy American!'

D & democrat & democrats. The Republican platform of 2000 stated that they wanted to work with other countries to help American products do better in the international marketplace. The 'buy American' slogan is mainly used by unions and union members are more likely to be Democrat. In response to a correction I received, I'll paste my reply: As with anything in political science, there are always exceptions to rules. Please look up on google "free trade" and "democrat" and the vast majority of results you will find are papers on how a democratic candidate can overcome the party's anti-free trade leanings. The Democratic party wants free trade - exporting, but importing they want the highest tariffs possible.
