Special Sub-Topic: Famous Years In British History

What year was the Battle of Hastings?

1066. This was the battle that ensured the success of the Norman Conquest over England by William of Normandy.

What year was the Peasants' Revolt?
1381. This was led by the infamous Wat Tyler, whose name has been the basis for many jokes!

What year was the Battle of Agincourt?
1415. This famous battle was won by the English, led by Henry V, against the French in the Hundred Years' War.

What year was the Battle of Bosworth Field?
1485. This was the battle that ended the War of The Roses, and saw Henry VII take the throne.

What year did The Mary Rose sink?
1545. The Mary Rose was the pride of Henry VIII's fleet, until he watched her sink at Portsmouth in 1545. The wreck was later raised in 1982, and is now on show in the Royal Dockyard at Portsmouth.

What year was the Battle of Naseby?
1645. This was last real hope for the king in the English Civil War, but he lost, was captured and lost his head four years later!

What year was the Battle of Culloden?
1746. This was the end of the Jacobite Rebellion, which if you look at the numbers in the armies was largely a battle between the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland.

What year was the Battle of Trafalgar?
1805. This was heralded as Nelson's greatest victory, but as he died during it, uttering the immortal words "Kiss me, Hardy", he wasn't able to improve on it.

What year was the Battle of Waterloo?
1815. It is a cardinal sin to confuse the dates of the Battles of Trafalgar and Waterloo, as one was a victory for the army, and the other for the navy!

When did The Titanic sink?
1912. This famous event was the subject of the brilliant, and well-titled film 'Titanic', starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. One of my top three favourite films, incidentally!
