Fun Trivia: A : Australian Lingo

Special Sub-Topic: Great Aussie Insults

She is a ______ short of a picnic.

sandwich. The Aussie version of "not the brightest crayon in the box" or "not the sharpest knife in the drawer". The sandwich was created, according to legend, by the Earl of Sandwich who, in the 1700s, ordered a servant to bring him two slices of bread with a piece of roast meat between them.

He is three ______ short of a full load.
bricks. This is same sort of insult as "She is a sandwich short of a picnic" - it implies that there is something missing "up top". A brick is a building material which measures 9" x 3" x 4.5".

May all you chooks turn into emus and kick your ______ down.
dunny. This is an Aussie's way of saying, "I hope that something really unpleasant happens to you." A dunny is an outhouse (external lavatory).

He has ______ loose in his top paddock.
kangaroos & roos. This insult is used to describe someone who is intellectually challenged.

If brains were gunpowder he couldn't blow off his ______ .
hat. An alternative to this is, "If brains were gunpowder he couldn't blow his nose."

His father was an ______ and he was his first shock.
electrician. This insult is used in reference to a person's appearance.

I wish you were a headache, then I could take an ______ and you'd go away.
aspirin & aspro. This is just an Aussie's way of saying, "I wish that you weren't here!"

His mother should have thrown him away and kept the ______ .
stork. This is another disparaging comment about the general quality of a person.

He's as flash as a rat with a gold ______ .
tooth. This is actually a compliment, saying that a person looks flash (has a smart appearance). The reference to the rat, however, makes the compliment double-edged and a back-handed compliment.

He's one ______ short of a barbie.
snag & sausage & sanger & snagger. Paul Hogan's tourism ads showed Paul throwing "another shrimp on the barbie." Most Aussies throw snags (sausages) on the barbie.

He's not the full ______ .
quid. A quid was one pound (or twenty shillings), prior to February, 1966. If you are not the full quid you are "not all there".

She has more ______ than cents (sense).
dollars. On February 14th, 1966 Australia changed to decimal currency (dollars and cents) from pounds, shillings and pence.

They are an ______ looking for somewhere to happen.
accident. You don't want to be around this person - they are clumsy and accident prone.

What do you think it is? ______ week?
Bush. This has nothing to do with President Bush. This comment means that you have said something really stupid. The speaker doesn't believe it and thinks that you are insulting their intelligence. The expression came into being in the 1800s. An annual Agricultural Show was held in Sydney. Many people from the Bush would come to Sydney for the show. Because life in the country was so simple, compared to city life, the country folk were considered to be a bit gullible and some people would even try to sell them the Harbour Bridge.

He doesn't know if he is ______ or Martha.
Arthur. If you don't know if you are Arthur or Martha you are so stupid that you can't even tell your own sex.
