The French and Indian War took place before the United States was formed, but it had an enormous effect on British and Colonial relations which culminated in the American Revolution. Which of the following films takes place during this war?

    The Last of the Mohicans. This film has been made many times, most recently in 1992 with Daniel Day-Lewis.

Which of these films deals with the American Revolution?
    The Patriot. "The Patriot", starring Mel Gibson, is one of a handful of films that deal with this pivotal event.

This film, dealing with the War of 1812, was made first in 1938 by Cecil B. DeMille, then again in 1958 directed by Anthony Quinn.
    The Buccaneer. The 1958 remake starred Yul Brynner as the pirate Jean Lafitte and Charleton Heston as Andrew Jackson.

Before Texas entered the union, it fought a war with Mexico for its independence. This was one of the precursors of the later Mexican American War. The most famous movie dealing with this event was "The Alamo." Name the director and star of this 1960 film.
    John Wayne. John Wayne had to wage a mighty long and expensive fight to get this film made.

This movie features Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. It tells the story of the first black volunteer regiment during the Civil War.
    Glory. This is one of the very best of all Civil War movies. It features exquisite acting, directing and writing.

"Sergeant York", set during World War I, starred which actor?
    Gary Cooper. Cooper won an Oscar for his performance as the heroic York, and deservedly so. A very fine movie; well directed by Howard Hawks.

There are many excellent movies dealing with World War II. One of my favorites deals with the last major tank battle of the war. It features Henry Fonda and Robert Shaw.
    The Battle of the Bulge. I've seen this film many times and it never loses its excitement. Particularly noteworthy is the wonderully stirring music composed by Benjamin Frankel.

This black comedy from 1970 was directed by Robert Altman and featured Donald Sutherland and Elliot Gould as doctors during the Korean War. It was a very succesful film and an even more succesful television series.
    M*A*S*H. Gary Burghoff, as "Radar" O'Reilly, was the only cast member from the film to appear in the television series.

The Vietnam War, while the most controversial conflict in United States history, produced many fine films. One of these was directed by Stanley Kubrick and starred Matthew Modine. It depicts the experiences of Private "Joker" in boot camp and in combat.
    Full Metal Jacket. Anthony Michael Hall was originally cast as Private "Joker," but was fired due to conflicts with Kubrick.

Denzel Washington and Meg Ryan appear in this movie, which examines the meaning of courage during the Gulf War.
    Courage Under Fire. The use of flashback is used to a large extent in this film, similar to the classic "Rashomon."
