Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which state did the "Last Island" Hurricane make landfall in August 1856?

Answer: Louisiana

Last Island ("Isle Derniere") was a resort located on a barrier island in south-central Louisiana. This hurricane, estimated to be a Category 4 at landfall, destroyed the entire resort and ripped the island in half. Two hundred or more deaths were attributed to the storm.
2. Which 1954 storm holds the record for the northernmost landfalling Category 4 on record?

Answer: Hazel

Hurricane Hazel devasted the North/South Carolina coastline with estimated sustained winds of 150 mph and a storm surge of nearly 18 feet. The storm moved so quickly that later the same day, October 15, sustained winds of hurricane force were felt in Toronto, Ontario.
3. In early September 1919 the sixth most intense landfalling US hurricane (in terms of pressure) roared ashore near Key West, Florida. Where did its next and final landfall occur?

Answer: Southern Texas

The lowest pressure in this storm was measured at 927mb, just west of Key West, making this hurricane one of the strongest to strike the southern Florida Keys during the 1900s. Between 600 and 900 fatalities resulted with the majority occurring in the Corpus Christi area and from ships at sea.
4. All but one of the storm pairs below have made direct landfalls (circulation center crossed the coastline) in the same state. Which pair does not fit this criterion?

Answer: Fran (1996), Ophelia (2005)

Hurricanes Donna and Charley both struck southwestern Florida. Both Edna and Gerda made landfall in Maine. The Great Atlantic Hurricane and Hurricane Gloria both crossed North Carolina's coastline. Both Fran and Ophelia affected North Carolina's coast, but only Fran made a direct hit (Ophelia's center remained just offshore).
5. The 2005 Atlantic Hurricane season broke countless, longstanding records. Of the records listed below, which did NOT apply to the 2005 season?

Answer: Most major hurricanes in one season

As of 2007, the year 1950 retains the record for the most major (category 3 or higher) hurricanes to form in one season. During that year, eight storms attained Category 3 or higher status; 2005 saw seven.
6. Which storm listed was the only tropical cyclone on record to make landfall in mainland Europe?

7. Hurricane Lenny carved a very erratic path through the Caribbean in November 1999. Where did it make its final landfall?

Answer: Antigua

8. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida. What was the name of the only other landfalling storm of that season?

Answer: Danielle

Tropical Storm Danielle struck the Eastern Shore of Virginia on September 25. It is among a handful of storms to have made landfall directly on the Virginia coastline.
9. Which cyclone, reaching Category 5 strength before lashing the coast of Mexico, posted the record for the strongest storm of the 1977 season?

Answer: Anita

Anita struck the northeastern coast of Mexico, near La Pesca, on September 2. The storm rapidly traversed central Mexico and two days later, it's remnants briefly redevloped into a tropical depression before dissipating just south of Baja California.
10. Which storm is the only on record to have made landfall in Panama?
