Fun Trivia: H : Hajime no Ippo

Special Sub-Topic: Ippo vs Sendo: All Japan Rookie King Match

What is Ippo suffering from before the match?

Broken Hand. He still has a broken hand from his fight with Mashiba. His pain is partly relieved with the help of Yamaguchi-Sensei.

When Sendo comes to meet Ippo before their match, he spars with Takamura. Does Sendo hit Takamura?
Yes. Sendo is outclassed by Takamura, but he does fairly well against him. You can tell he is from the streets because he uses his elbow on a follow-through to hit Takamura in the nose. He tells Takamura it was on purpose, which causes Takamura to knock him off his feet. Sendo then gets back up and hits Takamura with a Smash. The punch causes Takamura to slide back, which ticks him off. He throws a vicious hook that knocks Sendo out for a while.

Sendo uses what type of punch that Ippo uses?
Smash. It's first revealed that he can use it during the match with Sendo, but he uses it many times in the fight against Ippo. Just to remind you, a smash is a type of punch that is between an uppercut and a straight. Both Sendo and Ippo throw a variation of this. Sendo's curl in an arc and he generally uses his left hand, while Ippo's are in a straight diagonal line and he uses his right hand.

Who gets the first hit?
Sendo & Takeshi & Sendo Takeshi. At the beginning of the first round Sendo’s pressure stuns Ippo and he attacks right off the bat, hitting Ippo with some hard jabs. Ippo retreats, but is astonished to discover that he’s already at the rope.

How many of Sendo's smashes actually hit Ippo in the second round?
Two. The second round starts with Sendo coming out with a smash. Since Ippo saw this in the sparring match against Takamura he manages to block most of it. However, that isn’t the only smash in Sendo’s arsenal. From far below comes another Smash at an angle Ippo didn’t know about. The punch connects and Ippo’s mouth guard goes flying into the air. Turns out Ippo barely managed to guard under his chin. Then, later in the round,Ippo charges in with a hook. Sendo dodges and delivers a right straight to Ippo sending him back into the ropes. Sendo winds up the modified version of the smash and charges at the trapped Ippo. Ippo tilts his head avoiding some of the punch, but it still connects.

What is different about Sendo's smash than Ippo's?
Sendo starts out lower. To do it Sendo starts out with a real low stance and rises up with full momentum delivering the smash. It's a high risk move, but if it hits the pay off is huge. He throws it with his left hand.

What is strange about Ippo the final round?
He's mirroring Sendo. Ippo and Sendo stare down each other in the middle of the ring when Ippo does something unexpected. He drops the peek a boo style! Ippo’s stance mirrors Sendo’s and Sendo doesn’t like it.

Who gets downed first?
Sendo & Takeshi & Sendo Takeshi. It is finally Ippo who hits with a smash of his own, it’s a different kind than what Sendo throws. Sendo’s smash curls, but Ippo’s went straight up. The Kamogawa gang is stunned since they never saw Ippo throw one like this before. Until Takamura reminds them that it’s been a while, but that’s the same punch that Ippo used to beat Miyata. Sendo shakes it off and charges at Ippo they both hit each other at the same time with smashes. They both hit each other at the same time. They go again, but this time Ippo’s is more compact. He hits Sendo with his smash and Sendo is sent to the canvas. Sendo manages to get back up at the count of 9.

What is the final decision of the fight?
Ippo by KO. Sendo hits Ippo with a few smashes and Ippo starts falling down, but he stops himself and manages to hit Sendo in the temple. This stuns Sendo, but he keeps pounding away on the helpless Ippo. Sendo keeps hitting Ippo, but he’s saved by the bell. Sendo keeps hitting and it takes his trainer to stop him. Kamogawa pulls Ippo out and back to the corner. Ippo is in bad shape, really bad shape. He still wants to fight, but Kamogawa is thinking of throwing in the towel. The next round is about to start…but Sendo doesn’t get up. The referee waves his hands and stops the match! Sendo does not respond to the fourth Round Gong. Ippo’s punch to the temple is what did it. Sendo was fighting even though he lost consciousness.

What round does the fight end in?
Third. In the first and second round, Ippo is beaten down badly by Sendo, but hits Sendo a few times. In the third round Ippo downs Sendo and then KOs him with a punch to the temple.
