Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Luke 17:11, Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem when he encountered ten lepers. In what region was he at the time?

Answer: The border between Samaria and Galilee.

Jesus was traveling along the border between Samaria and Galilee. However, no specific location is given. It's interesting to note Jews and Samaritans largely despised each other and often stayed within their jurisdictions to avoid having interactions with each other.

However, it was different for lepers. It was strictly a case of misery loves company and it would not be uncommon for Jewish and Samaritan lepers to be in a group in the region Jesus was traveling through.
2. According to Luke 17:12, where was Jesus when he saw the men with leprosy?

Answer: As he was going into a village.

He saw the ten lepers as he was going into a village. However, the village is not identified. It would only make sense for lepers to be outside a village as they would not be allowed inside. And if they were in a remote area, there would be a substantially less chance of getting some type of assistance from people.
3. Scripture reports the lepers stood at a distance and according to Luke 17:13, they called out in a loud voice. What did they say?

Answer: "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!"

The correct answer is the lepers cried out "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!" Their calling out in a loud voice reminds me of blind Bartimaeus and how he cried out for help from Jesus before he regained his sight. In Bartimaeus' case, he belted out the words "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me." Despite opposition from the crowd, Bartimaeus got Jesus' attention and re-grained his sight, as per Mark 10:46-52.
4. According to Luke 17:14, what did Jesus say to the lepers when they called out to him?

Answer: "Go, show yourselves to the priests."

Jesus simply told the lepers "go, show yourselves to the priests." As they proceeded on their way to show themselves to the priests, a miracle happened as Scripture reports they were suddenly healed of their leprosy. According to notes in the NIV Study Bible, showing oneself to the priests was a normal procedure after a cure. (Further information about showing oneself to the priests can be found in Leviticus 13:2-3 and 14:2-32.)
5. Scripture reports that after the lepers were healed, one of them came back to give thanks to Jesus. When he came back to Jesus, what was the man doing?

Answer: Praising God in a loud voice.

The healed man was praising God in a loud voice, according to Scripture. Once again, we see the words "loud voice" in this passage of Scripture. It's interesting to note the lepers cried out for help in a loud voice and when one of them returned, his tone hadn't quieted down at all.

The former leper was obviously ecstatic with the deplorable affliction Jesus had removed forever from his life. It must have been a wonderful sight to see.
6. Luke 17:16 states the man healed of leprosy threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. What was different about the man from the other lepers.

Answer: He was a Samaritan.

The correct answer is he was a Samaritan. This is noteworthy because Jews and Samaritans largely despised each other in Biblical times. However, as explained in the answer to the first question, it would not be uncommon to see Jewish and Samaritan lepers living together, especially along the border between Galilee and Samaria.

The lepers were despised by everyone, it seems, and it made sense for them to live together. Although there was a major rift between the Jews and Samaritans in Biblical times, the four Gospels continually report about Jesus looking favorably among the Samaritans.

Some examples that leap to mind are the Samaritan woman at the well and the Parable of the Good Samaritan.
7. When the one leper came back to thank Jesus, what did Christ say?

Answer: "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?"

Scripture reports Christ stated, "were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?" It's a question that begged to be asked. Scripture doesn't state if the healed man answered Jesus' question about the whereabouts of the other nine. It's possible he didn't know where the other nine were as they may have all gone different ways. We can only speculate.
8. In Luke 17:18, Jesus makes another statement. What does he say?

Answer: "Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?"

The correct answer is Jesus stated "was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" This is yet another example of Scripture where Samaritans are looked upon favorably by Jesus. While no exact time frame is given as to when the man was healed, Scripture indicates he returned right after he realized he was healed. Verse 15, in the NIV Bible, states: "One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice." The other nine, when they realized they were healed, may have continued to "show themselves to the priests" as Jesus' instructions in verse 14.

However, no one knows. The bottom line in this Biblical story is only one of the cured 10 lepers returned to thank Christ.
9. According to Luke 17:19, what does Jesus tell the man that has made him well?

Answer: His faith

Jesus told the cured leper his faith had made him well. Luke 17:19, in the NIV Bible, states Jesus told the man, "rise and go; your faith has made you well." Time and again we read in the four Gospels about people being healed and Jesus declaring their faith had made them well.

This theme is found as well in Acts when accounts are given about people being healed by the likes of Peter and Paul.
10. What do we learn about what happened to the other nine?

Answer: Scripture doesn't say.

No information is given about the nine other men who were healed of leprosy as there is no further mention of them again in Scripture. We can only speculate. Many Christians see the story about the ten lepers as a lesson in the importance of giving thanks and how easy it is to take blessings in life for granted.
