Fun Trivia: M : Marsupials and Monotremes

Special Sub-Topic: Kangaroos

Kangaroos can only be found in two countries. Do you know which two?

Australia & New Guinea. While there are over 40 species of kangaroos and wallabies found in Australia, two species can also be found in New Guinea, Australia’s northern neighbour. The largest of the species is called the 'red kangaroo' and are found in inland areas.

Kangaroos are a common pet.
    F. Don't believe all you see on TV. Kangaroos are wild animals and are best left that way. They need wide open spaces to survive naturally. It's not totally uncommon for an orphaned or injured juvenile to be raised by human hand and then released into the wild once it can fend for itself, but it would be cruel to keep one as a pet (and illegal without permission to do so).

A deer is to 'buck' as a kangaroo is to a '________'
Boomer. Male kangaroos are called boomers, females are does or flyers. Juvenile kangaroos are joeys.

Kangaroos belong to the family 'Macropodia.' Which of these animals does not belong to the macropod family? (Think body dynamics)
Wombat. Macropods (a Greek word meaning 'big foot') have large hind legs and muscular feet, shorter fore legs and a strong tail which is used for balance. A quokka is a unique little fellow whose main population calls Rottnest Island, off the South West Australian coast, home.

Off the coast of Southern Australia lies the country's third largest island, Kangaroo Island. A famous English explorer named the island as gratitude for the 26 kangaroos they killed for fresh meat. It was the first they had eaten since they left England. Which explorer named the island?
Matthew Flinders. Matthew Flinders discovered the island while circumnavigating and charting Australia in 1802. Deserters from American and English whaling ships settled it soon after. Kangaroo Island is still a natural wonderland and is home to seals, fairy penguins, whales, dolphins, kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and emus, over 250 bird species and 70 native tree species.

A dolphin is to 'pod' as a kangaroo is to '_______ ?'
Mob. Kangaroos are a social animal and live in 'mobs.' Mobs can be as small as two and three or as large as 100. Other recognised collective nouns for kangaroos are 'troop' and also a less used term, a 'court' of kangaroos.

Which kangaroo species is the tallest marsupial on earth?
Red Kangaroo. While the red kangaroo is the tallest marsupial on earth, the eastern grey male, though shorter on average is roughly the same weight.

How fast can a kangaroo hop?
40-60 kph / 25-37 mph. Kangaroos move by hopping on their hind legs while using the tail like a rudder for steering. When they're moving slowly, the large and powerful tail works like an extra leg. The eastern grey can jump as high as 9 feet and leap nearly 25 feet in one bound!

The reproductive system of a kangaroo is quite incredible. Babies are born undeveloped and make their way to the pouch where they live, feed and grow. How long will a common eastern grey or red joey live in mum's pouch?
9 months. Although out of the pouch, a joey will continue to suckle until 12 to seventeen months old. Amazingly, kangaroos can have 3 babies at a time. One baby out of the pouch and still feeding, one in the pouch, and an embryo ready to go but in pause mode until the pouch is vacated. A flyer has four teats, all with different milks for the various levels of infant maturity.

Lastly, one of these fictitious kangaroos doesn't exist. Can you pick which one?
Olly: The Olympic Kangaroo. For the 2000 Sydney Olympics, 3 unique Aussie mascots were adopted. 'Mille' the echidna, 'Syd' the platypus and 'Olly' who was in fact a Kookaburra (Aussies were not happy not having our most famous ambassador ignored as a mascot). Qantas is Australia’s national airline and is known as the 'flying kangaroo' due to the kangaroo on the tail insignia. Matilda was a boxing kangaroo in a 1978 movie and is now one of Australia’s favourite sporting icons. It can be seen at any Aussie sporting event on boxing kangaroo flags. Skippy? "Well, she'll be right 'ey skip?"
