Fun Trivia: F : Famous Women

Special Sub-Topic: Mixed "INGRIDients" !

Princess Ingrid Alexandra was born on January 21, 2004. As second in line to the throne, she could become which country's first female head of state since Queen Margrethe's rule ended in 1412?

Norway. Ingrid Alexandra is the daughter of Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit, Prince Haakon is next in line to his father, King Hararld V. A 1990 amendment to the Norwegian constitution means that the succession goes to the reigning monarch's oldest child, regardless of sex. A similar amendment was made in Sweden in 1979, so the next in line to the Swedish throne is also (sort of) an Ingrid. Princess Victoria Ingrid Alice Désirée Bernadotte, born July 14, 1977, is the oldest child of King Carl Gustaf XVI and Queen Silvia.

An Ingrid came to public attention after a 1993 murder. On New Year's Eve, in Bronxville, New York, newspaper heiress Anne Scripps Douglas was attacked by her husband, Scott Douglas, while their 3-year-old daughter looked on. She died several weeks later, as did her murderer, an apparent suicide. Anne's family have since accused a Westchester County Family Court Judge of refusing to grant an order which they said could have prevented the murder. The accused was Judge Ingrid who?
Braslow. Anthony Morell was Anne's first husband. He was in hospital, dying from cirrhosis of the liver, when Anne was attacked. Morell left hospital and was with Anne when their two daughters decided to turn off her life-support (she had been bashed repeatedly on the head with the hammer she'd hidden under her pillow to protect her from Scott). As she was a 'living corpse', Anne's organs were recovered, and her liver found a new home in her ex-husband, saving his life. Hilda Uguna was killed by her husband, Luis, in 1998, in the same jurisdiction as the Douglas murder. The strikingly similar circumstances of the cases added impetus to the push for reform to domestic violence laws in Westchester County. One of the strongest proponents of change was Jeanine Pirro, who became Westchester District Attorney on 1 January, 1994. Pirro hadn't even seen her new office when she was called to the scene of Anne Douglas's murder. The Scripps are not the only family to have made allegations against Judge Ingrid S Braslow. Several campaigns have been launched calling for her impeachment for failing to protect those who come before her because of her support of "feminocracy". Judge Braslow resigned before impeachment could become a real possibility, and the only reference to her since is about her work as a "Frank Lloyd Wright Volunteer". For more on the Douglas case, see http://www.crimelibrary.com/notorious_murders/family/anne_scripps/1.html?sect=12 For more on calls to impeach Judge Braslow and "feminocracy", see http://www.theodora.com/teddy/newyork/braslow.html

Without doubt the most famous acting Ingrid was Bergman, but there have been a number of others. One of them starred in such films as "Countess Dracula" (1972), and "The Wicker Man" (1973), both for Hammer Films. Known as the "Queen of Horror". Which Ingrid is she?
Pitt. Ingrid Thulin (1926-2004) was a Swedish actress who starred in several Ingmar Bergman films, including the classic "Wild Strawberries" in 1957. Ingrid Wiese was in the cast of TV reality show "Joe Schmo II" before she worked out it was a fake (no!), but was allowed to stay on anyway ... Ingrid Windisch is known for her work behind the camera, most notably as executive producer of "Wings of Desire" (1987), which was remade as "City of Angels" in 1998. Ingrid Pitt (1937- ) is only too happy to tell you all about herself at http://www.pittofhorror.com/about/index.htm

Literary Ingrids aren't, alas, exactly jumping off the shelves, but there are a few notables. As part of his 1994 State of the Nation Address to Parliament, President Nelson Mandela read a poem written by this South African Ingrid. The poem (with the poet's capitalization) was called "The child who was shot dead by soldiers at Nyanga". Which Ingrid was this poet?
Jonker. Ingrid Sischy is a journalist, having worked as Editor of "Interview" and "Vanity Fair" magazines. Ingrid Schubert collaborates with her husband, Dieter, as a children's author/illustrator, amongst their works "There's a Crocodile Under My Bed" (re-released 2005), and "My Hero" (2005). Ingrid Bacci is a natural therapist, fibromyalgia sufferer, and writer of "The Art of Effortless Living" (2002), and "Effortless Pain Relief" (2005). Ingrid Jonker (1933-1965) wrote in her native Afrikaans, and her work has been translated into many languages. She published two books of poems before her suicide, by drowning, in Cape Town. "Onvlugting" ("Escape") was released in 1956, and "Rook en Oker" ("Smoke and Ochre") followed in 1963. "Kantelson" ("Setting Sun") was released posthumously in 1966. More about her sad story can be found at http://www.sahistory.org.za/pages/people/jonker,i.htm "Where's Ingrid Bengis?" I hear you all ask. Don't get me started! I was happily researching this Russian-American author, until it became obvious nobody's actually sure if there is one Ingrid Bengis, or two. I had thought I would be fairly safe with a name like Ingrid, but not so. Further evidence of this is in the notes to Question 5.

To Germany for this Ingrid, one of the infamous ones. In 1970, Ulrike Meinhof and Gudrun Ensslin plotted to free Ensslin's boyfriend, Andreas Baader, from prison in Berlin. Baader, along with Marxist associates, had been convicted of bombing two Berlin department stores in 1968. Two other young women were directly involved in assisting Baader escape: Irene Goergens and which other Ingrid?
Schubert. They called themselves the "Rote Armee Fraktion" ("Red Army Faction", or "RAF"). To the rest of the world they were known as the "Baader-Meinhof Gang" (or Group). Mostly young people, they reacted to the violence of the Third Reich by - somewhat ironically - becoming incredibly violent themselves. Many factors motivated the "RAF", among them guilt, rebellion against the previous generation, and a true belief in the system they sought to install. An overview of the Baader-Meinhof history, including the escape, can be found at http://www.crimelibrary.com/terrorists/baader/ Wetter and Wegener were Baader's two bodyguards, killed during his escape. Bernward Vesper was Ensslin's former fiancé, and father of the son she abandoned to pursue her political activities. Those paying attention might have noticed that Ingrid Schubert turned up in Question 4. What, this left-wing terrorist rehabilitated to write children's books? No. This time I am sure it is two different people. Ingrid Schubert of the "RAF" met the same fate as many of the group: she committed suicide in Stadelheim Prison, Munich, in 1977. Incidentally, Stadelheim shouldn't be confused with Stammheim Prison, Stuttgart, which is the where Baader, Ensslin and Raspe of the "RAF" all committed suicide, apparently simultaneously, on October 18th, 1977. For further information see http://www.baader-meinhof.com/terminology/terms/deathnight.html.

Ingrids seem to have a tendency to be kidnapped by guerrilla groups in Colombia. In 1999, Ingrid Washinawatok was setting up a traditional school for the U'wa Indians when she was kidnapped and murdered. Another Ingrid was kidnapped by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in February 2002. Green politician and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, which Ingrid is she?
Betanacourt. Ingrid Newkirk is the President of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Ingrid Strobl is an Austrian feminist author who was convicted and sentenced as a member of terrorist organisations in 1989. She was released in 1990, when the judgement was reversed. Ingrid Betanacourt and her campaign manager, Clara Rojas, were taken by FARC (a.k.a. Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) on September 23, 2002. The group wanted to negotiate a swap for some of their members being held by the Colombian Government. As of April 2005, Betanacourt and Rojas have not been released. More info on them is at http://web.greens.org/ingrid/free_ingrid.htm More info on Ingrid Washinawatok is at http://www.ncccusa.org/news/99news61a.html

Lest you start thinking Ingrids are only involved in controversial events, here's a happy story. The John and Ingrid Werler Society was set up for supporters of which North American Zoo?
Houston Zoo. Los Angeles Zoo is, of course, in California. Blank Park Zoo is in Des Moines, Iowa, and Seneca Park Zoo is in Rochester, New York. John Werler was a longtime Director of the Houston Zoo. He died in March 2004, at the age of 81. He and his wife Ingrid (1923-2003) were "fixtures" at the zoo for some 40 years, known as "mom and dad" to many of their zoo family. For more on them and the Society see http://www.houstonzoo.org/index.asp?page_ID=382

To prove all Ingrids are not just pretty faces, Belgian Ingrid Daubechies is a much awarded and respected academic in which field?
Mathematics and physics. Born in 1954, Ingrid Daubechies gained her Bachelor's degree in physics from the Free University, Brussels, in 1975. She gained her PhD, also in physics, from the same institution in 1980. While Assistant Professor in the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Free University she won her first major prize, the Louis Empain Prize for Physics. In 1987 Daubechies moved to America, taking up a post as Professor in the Mathematics Department at Rutgers University, New Jersey, in 1991. She was elected as Fellow of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 1998, and to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999. More information on Ingrid Daubechies is at http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Daubechies.html Perhaps because it contains the word 'grid', INGRID is a very popular acronym for things scientific. There's the Isaac Newton Group Red Imaging Device used by astronomers, the INformation GRID system for global information navigation, and the intriguing INGRID Chamber for use in surface x-ray diffraction experiments. Other very smart Ingrids include Tropical Cyclone Ingrid - who kept the meteorologists around the top end of Australia guessing in early 2005 - and, well, me!

Ingrids can be sporty, too. Which of these Norwegian Ingrids is the former World Record holder for the marathon?
Kristiansen. Ingrids Stoekl, Gfoelner and Salvenmoser are all Alpine skiers. (I couldn't have made those names up if I'd tried!) During the 1980s, Ingrid Kristiansen (1956- ) set six World Records in three events. The times came for the 5000m in 1981, 1984 and 1986, for the 10000m in 1985 and 1986, and for the marathon in 1985.

In Henrik Ibsen's "Peer Gynt", Ingrid is kidnapped by Peer on her wedding day. "Ingrid's Lament" is one of the many memorable moments in Edvard Grieg's musical version of the story. In music of a different kind, Jim and Ingrid Croce (pronounced 'croshay') released a duo album in 1969. What was the album called?
"Jim and Ingrid Croce". The album, which was later re-released as "Jim and Ingrid Croce, Another Day, Another Town", featured mostly original songs by the couple. Jim Croce, most famously known for the song "Time in a Bottle", died in a plane crash in 1971. In 1985, Ingrid opened Croce's Restaurant and Jazz Bar in San Diego, California, in memory of her late husband. Ingrid is a popular name in hospitality, with Ingrid's Hotel (Kamuela, Hawaii), Ingrid's Inn (Kasilof, Alaska), Pension Ingrid (Prague, Czechozlovakia), and Ingrid's Guesthouse (Florence, Italy). Must just have a comforting ring I guess. Ingrid was also the name of Orangutan Foundation International's Gorilla of the Month for March 1999. But by far my favourite reference is Ingrid West Machinery Ltd, Gloucestershire, England, who, since 1968, have been proudly "Supplying Your Every Coil Winding Need!" I hope you had at least half as much fun playing this quiz as I had putting it together!
