Fun Trivia: O : Olympics History

Special Sub-Topic: Olympic Host Cities

Which city hosted the Winter Games only two years after the previous Winter Games had been held?

Lillehammer. This small Norwegian town was the 1994 host, two years after the Games of Albertville. The reason for this un-Olympic interval was that the IOC wanted Winter and Summer Games to be arranged in separate years and achieved this by shortening one interval for the Winter Games.

Collecting three gold medals, US sprinter Wilma Rudolph was a major star of the Summer Games hosted in this city.
Rome & Roma. Rudolph won gold on the 100m, 200m, and 4 x 100m relay. Her merits were added to by her history of overcoming a whole bundle of diseases as a child.

Which town may thank the people of Colorado that it was allowed to host the Winter Games for a second time?
Innsbruck. The Austrian town of Innsbruck had hosted the 1964 Winter Games, and stepped in once more in 1976 when the people of Colorado voted to prohibit public funds from being used to support the Games originally given to Denver.

Which of these cities has NOT hosted the Olympic Games?
Toronto. The Finnish capital of Helsinki hosted the 1952 Summer Games. Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy was where the 1956 Winter Games were held, and the Japanese city of Sapporo in 1972 became the first Asian city to host the Winter Games.

Which city that arranged the 1992 Summer Games? It was the hometown of the IOC president at the time, and a fresh attraction of the Games was a US "Dream Team" in basketball.
Barcelona & Barcelone. The IOC president at this time was, of course, Juan Antonio Samaranch.

At the 1972 Summer Games in Munich, a violent terrorist action that claimed the lives of 11 athletes and one policeman totally overshadowed what took place in the arenas. What was the name of the terrorist group responsible for the action?
Black September. In November 1971, Black September made its first appearance on the stage of terror when four Palestinians shot dead the Jordanian Prime minister in Cairo. The Munich Massacre saw two Israeli athletes killed in the terrorists' first raid, whereas the other victims - nine more Israeli athletes, one German policeman - fell during the shootout that ended the ensuing hostage drama. Five terrorists were also killed.

The 1908 Summer Games in London took place over a period of five months, and the status of the competitions was so obscure that several athletes died without knowing they had ever participated in the Olympics?
    f. This is all true, however, of the 1900 Summer Games in Paris. Some things have certainly changed over the past century.

Which of these countries had two or more Olympic host cities during the 20th century?
Norway. Oslo hosted the Winter Games in 1952, Lillehammer in 1994. The only Russian city ever to have hosted the Games is Moscow (1980, Summer). London has hosted the Summer Games twice, in 1908 and 1948, but no other city in Britain has been given the task. Amsterdam had the 1928 Summer Games and that's it for the Netherlands.

Nagano saw two new official sports join the Olympic programme as the city hosted the 1998 Winter Games. One of them was snowboard. What was the other sport?
Curling. Women's ice hockey was also introduced, but the sport as such was already there (though not the female players).

Which city that had its Olympic experience flawed by an African boycott caused by a rugby team from New Zealand?
Montreal. Montreal hosted the Summer Games of 1976. The New Zealand rugby team had toured in apartheid South Africa, and therefore the Africans refused to compete in the same arena as New Zealand athletes.
