Fun Trivia: M : Matching Character and Actor

Special Sub-Topic: On a Role (or two)

Which actress played both Brenda Walsh on "Beverly Hills, 90210" and Prue Halliwell in "Charmed"?

Shannen Doherty. Ms. Doherty played the good girl on "Beverly Hills, 90210" with her twin brother Brandon (Jason Priestly) who moved from Minneapolis to Beverly Hills. The show ran from 1990 through May, 2000. She was also one of the original three sister witches on "Charmed" from 1998 to 2001, before being replaced by Rose Mcgowan. The incorrect choices are the other lead actresses who played Paige Matthews, Phoebe Halliwell and Piper Halliwell, respectively.

Dating back to the old black-and-white days of tv, who portrayed Lucas McCain on "The Rifleman" and Jason McCord on "Branded"?
Chuck Connors. Chuck Connors was born Kevin Joseph Aloysius Connors in Brooklyn in 1921. Prior to his acting career, he played briefly for the MLB Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949 and the Chicago Cubs in 1951 and professional basketball with the Boston Celtics. I found it interesting that on both "The Rifleman" (1958-1963) and "Branded" (1965-1966) both of his characters were originally stripped to the waist, tied to a tree and left to die (which, obviously, they didn't)! He was elected to the Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1991.

While Matthew Perry made the role of Chandler Bing famous on "Friends" (1994-2004), can you tell me what his character name is on his series "Go On", which debuted in 2012?
Ryan King. On "Go On" (2012), Matthew Perry plays sportscaster Ryan King who has just lost his wife and is forced to go to group therapy sessions with a bunch of other wacky characters who have also lost loved ones. For the Matthew Perry aficionados, you may recognize the incorrect choices as other roles Perry has played, i.e., Joe Quincy on "The West Wing" (2003), Nicholas Oseransky in the 2000 movie "The Whole Nine Yards" and Ben Donovan on "Mr. Sunshine" in 2011.

Who portrayed the role of Sarah Reeves on "Party of Five" and "Melinda Gordon" on "Ghost Whisperer"?
Jennifer Love Hewitt. Jennifer Love Hewitt (her actual given name) was born in Waco, Tx in 1979. She began acting in Disney's "Kids Incorporated" in 1984. Ms. Hewitt has been in movies like "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (1997) and "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Can't Hardly Wait, both in 1998. More recently, she starred as Riley Parks on the tv show "The Client List" (2012). This multi-talented actress also wrote "Music Box", a five-issue comic book series published in 2009.

Who played Jim West in "Wild Wild West" in the 1960s and 'Pappy' Boyington in "Black Sheep Squadron" in the late 1970s?
Robert Conrad. Robert Conrad was born Konrad Robert Falkowski in Chicago, IL in 1929. On "The Wild, Wild West" (1965-1969) he did most of his own stunts and was injured several times during the filming of the show, including a serious injury in 1965 which resulted from a head-first fall on to a concrete floor below. In 1999, when the remade version of "Wild Wild West" (with Will Smith) swept the 20th Annual Razzie awards, Conrad accepted three of the awards in person to show his disdain for what had been done to the film.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus portrayed Christine Campbell in "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and Ellie Riggs on the short-lived "Watching Ellie", but what was the name of her character on the breakout hit "Seinfeld"?
Elaine Benes. Julia Elizabeth Scarlett Louis-Dreyfus was born in Manhattan, NY in 1961. She has appeared on tv since 1982 when she was on "Saturday Night Live". In 1988 she played Eileen Swift on the sitcom "Day by Day" (along with the then-unknown Courtney Thorne-Smith). She was Maggie Lizer on "Arrested Development" (2004-2005) and Selina Meyer on the cable show "Veep" (2012). She made her movie debut in Woody Allen's star-studded "Hannah and Her Sisters" in 1986.

It is diffcult to do a quiz of multiple role-playing without including Michael Landon; he was Little Joe on "Bonanza" and Charles Ingalls on "Little House on the Prairie" but what was the name of the show where he played Jonathan Smith?
Highway to Heaven. Michael Landon was born Eugene Maurice Orowitz in Queens, NY in 1936. His first movie role was as Tony Rivers in "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" in 1957. He has been one of tv's most recognizable faces from the 1950s when he played the youngest Cartwright son, to the 1970s when he played Laura Ingalls' 'Pa', through the 1980s when he depicted Jonathan Smith on "Highway to Heaven" (1984-1989). Sadly, he died from pancreatic cancer in 1991...gone way too soon!

Mayim Bialik was Blossom Russo on "Blossom" but what is her character name on the much more recent "The Big Bang Theory"?
Amy Farrah Fowler. Mayim Bialik is not your ordinary actress. In 1988 she had a major role in the movie "Beaches" with Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey and, in 1990, went on to star in the tv comedy "Blossom". By 1993 she had won a place at both Harvard and Yale, but chose to go to UCLA where she received a Bachelor's degree in 2000, all the while still acting and doing voice-overs. She won her PhD in Neuroscience in 2007 and, in 2010, began playing the part of Amy Farrah Fowler, the brainy neuro-biologist on "The Big Bang Theory".

Which actress has played the role of both Peg Bundy on "Married with Children" and the one-eyed alien, Turanga Leela, on the animated show "Futurama"?
Katey Sagal. In 1987 Katey Sagal began to portray the iconic Peg Bundy on "Married with Children" opposite Ed O'Neill as her long-suffering husband Al. Among many other roles, she also played Cate Hennessy on "8 Simple Rules...for Dating My Teenage Daughter" (from 2002) opposite John Ritter; beginning in 2008, she was Gemma Teller Morrow on "Sons of Anarchy". Katey Sagal is from a famous show-business family where her father, Boris, was a director and her mother was a singer. She also has identical twin sisters, Liz and Jean, who starred in the tv comedy "Double Trouble" in 1984 and 1985.

I must end with the indomitable Andy Griffith who starred in two long-running tv shows "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Matlock", but what was his character's surname in the former?
Taylor. Yep, from 1960 through 1968, he was Sheriff Andy Taylor from Mayberry, North Carolina...can't you hear the theme song even now? In the turbulent 1960s, it was nice to have a smart, calm leader to look up to. He continued to dispense his wisdom as the down-home Atlanta attorney, Ben Matlock, from 1986 through 1995. He died on July 3, 2012, at the age of 86, in his home state of North Carolina.
