    Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. Jefferson and Burr each received 73 electoral votes. John Adams was also on the ballot and received 65 electoral votes. The House of Representatives, with each State having one vote, had to determine the winner. On the 36th ballot Jefferson won 10 States to 4 for Burr. Thus, Jefferson was named President of the U.S. and Burr was named Vice-President!

Which President made the following statement to his successor: 'If you are as happy, my dear sir, on entering this house as I am in leaving it; you are the happiest man in this country'?
    James Buchanan. After the inauguration ceremony, President James Buchanan accompanied President Abraham Lincoln to the White House and on departing he made the above comment to Lincoln.

Which U.S. President, in his earlier years, married a woman two years before her divorce from a previous marriage had been finalized?
    Andrew Jackson. In 1791,at age 24 years, future President Andrew Jackson married Rachel Donelson Robard. It was believed that Mr. Robard had already finalized the divorce proceedings from his wife. In 1793 the Jacksons discovered that her divorce from Mr. Robard had just then become final.Thus, the Jacksons were remarried in a new ceremony.

    John Calhoun. John Calhoun served for 4 years under President John Quincy Adams. He was then elected as Vice-President under President Andrew Jackson and served from 1829 until he resigned in 1832.

Who was the presidential candidate of the American Party in 1856?
    Milliard Fillmore. Vice President Millard Fillmore, a Whig Party member,became President of the U.S. in 1850 following the death of President Zachary Taylor. He served in that office until 1853. He did not run for re-election in 1852. In 1856 he accepted the presidential nomination of the American Party (a coalition of the Know-Nothings and Silver Gray {Whigs);} but he only received the 8 electoral votes of Maryland and was defeated by James Buchanan.

Who was the only President, who entered the White House as a bachelor, and then was married in the White House?
    Grover Cleveland. President Grover Cleveland entered the White House in 1886 as a 49 year old bachelor. In June of that year he married 21 year old Francis Folsom in a White House ceremony. They had one child born in the White House.

Which President lost the popular vote but won the election by only one electoral vote?
    Rutherford B. Hayes. Samuel J. Tilden, the Democratic nominee, won roughly 250,000 more popular votes than Rutherford B. Hayes. Initially, it was believed that there was a tie in the electoral votes for these two candidates. However, a special electoral commission corrected some of the contested votes and awarded 185 electoral votes to Hayes and 184 electoral votes to Tilden.

Which was the first President for whom the band played 'Hail to the Chief' at his inauguration?
    Martin Van Buren. According to 'The Book of World-Famous Music, Classical, Popular, and Folk' by James J. Fuld the song was first played on March 4, 1837 to announce the arrival of President Martin Van Buren for his inauguration.

Which 19th century President was elected to the U.S. Senate after he completed his term in the White House?
    Andrew Johnson. Andrew Johnson was President from 1865 to 1869. In 1874 he was elected to the U.S. Senate from the State of Tennessee. He is the only President to serve in the U.S. Senate after the completion of his term in the White House. In 1875 he died from a cerebral stroke.

How many Presidents have been elected as the candidates of the Democratic Party from the year 1789 (George Washington)to the year 2000 (Bill Clinton the 42nd President)?
    14. Since the first election in 1789 there have been two (2) Federalist {Presidents;} four (4) Democratic-Republican Party {Presidents;} four (4) Whig Party {Presidents;} fourteen (14) Democratic Party {Presidents;} and seventeen (17) Republican Party Presidents. This adds up to only 41 due to the fact that although Grover Cleveland was both the 22nd and 24th President, he is counted as only one Democratic Party President.
