Special Sub-Topic: "Popeye" The Sailor Man
What is Popeye's favorite food?
Spinach. In all versions of "Popeye", spinach was occasionally mentioned as the source of Popeye's great strength. In the animated versions, spinach would supercharge Popeye like a car on nitrous-oxide and endow him with superhuman strength, speed, agility and occasionally the ability to change his form. In the comic strip, Popeye's strength was a constant and sometimes explained by a steady diet of the leafy food.
In the comic strip and movie, what was the name of Popeye's arch enemy?
Bluto. In the comic strip and the movie "Popeye", Popeye's enemy is named Bluto. In the animated version he is named Brutus. I read that this change was made by the animators because it was feared that audiences would be put off by an odd name like Bluto.
This woman was Popeye's girlfriend.
Olive Oyl. Olive Oyl was a member of a family called the Oyls, the original main characters in cartoonist E.C. Segar's newspaper strip "Thimble Theatre." Olive's relatives included her brother Castor and her father Cole. After years of the Oyl's adventures, Segar introduced "Popeye The Sailor". He became popular so quickly that the name of the strip was changed.
What is the name of Popeye's father?
Poopdeck Pappy. Poopdeck Pappy was not what you would call an ideal father. He disappeared when Popeye was born, and has been quoted as saying "I don't like relatives."
He is Popeye's adopted son. Sometimes he's portrayed as Olive's child. What is his name?
Swea' Pea. In the comic strips, Swea' Pea can talk even though he is an infant. In the film he has the gift of precognition. In the animated cartoons, Swea' Pea often makes Popeye subject himself to mortal danger to protect the little guy. Adventures in babysitting indeed...
What is the name of Popeye's mooching friend?
Wimpy. Wimpy is played beautifly by Paul Dooley in the 1980 film.
What food does Popeye's mooching friend love most of all?
Hamburgers. Wimpy's most famous line is "I'd gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger, today."
Popeye has many allies. This one gets part of his name from an important vehicle used in WWII. What is his name?
Eugene the Jeep. Eugene has the ability to walk through solid objects. You might think that he isn't from around here...and you'd be right!
Like any hero, Popeye also has many enemies. One group of enemies he encountered on an island where he found his long-lost father. What were these creatures known as?
Goons. These critters are not the kind you want to meet in a dark alley...or on a desert island.
In the animated cartoons, Popeye has encountered Bluto as many famous fictional characters. Can you name two of them?
Sinbad the Sailor and Abu Hassin. Bluto portrayed Sinbad the Sailor and Abu Hassin ("Popeye Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves" episode) in two eleven-minute cartoons done by Fleischer Studios.
Bluto (or Brutus as he is usually known in the animation) actually did disguise himself as Superman in one cartoon to woo Olive away from Popeye. In that cartoon Olive was smitten by Superman while reading his comic book adventures; however, Bluto did not portray Superman.
