Fun Trivia: F : French

Special Sub-Topic: Qu'est-ce Que C'est?

How would you ask "Where is the book?"

Où est le livre?. To ask where something is, say "Où est..." and then the object. "Où est mon livre?" means "Where is MY book?".

Now that you have asked where the book is, someone has answered your question. Which of these could they have said?
Le livre est sur le bureau.. Again, none of the other answers make sense. "Le livre est sur le bureau" means "the book is on the desk." You could also say "Il est sur le bureau", which means "it is on the desk." "Le livre est le bureau" is "the book is the desk."

If you say "Qu'est-ce qu'il y a sous le lit?", what are you asking?
What is under the bed?. Actually, the correct answer translates to "What is it that there is under the bed," but we don't use all of those words in English.

You are visiting your friend Jean's house this afternoon. Jean asks if you have a tape recorder. What does he say?
Est-ce que tu as un magnetophone?. The word for tape recorder in French is magnetophone. A boombox would be 'une radio-cassette', while a stereo would translate to 'une chaîne-stereo.' The English word walkman is the same in French.

When you want to ask where a camera is, what would you say?
Où est l'appareil-photo?. The French word for camera is 'appareil-photo', while a photograph is formally referred to as 'une photographie', or casually as 'une photo'. "Un photographe" is a photographer.

To say that 'the man is behind the car', a French person would tell you what?
L'homme est derrière la voiture.. 'L'homme' means 'the man', 'derrière' means 'behind', while 'la voiture' means 'the car'. Another word for 'car' in French is 'auto'.

If someone asked you "Est-ce que l'ordinateur marche bien?", what could your answer be?
Oui, il marche très bien.. If someone asked you that question, they are asking 'does it work?' To answer, 'Oui, il marche très bien' means 'yes, it works very well.' Once again, the other answers don't make sense with the question. By the way, the old refrigerator joke is, "est-ce que votre réfrigérateur marche?" "Oui" "Eh bien il faut l'attraper, il marche dans la rue."

What would someone normally answer to the question: 'Qu'est-ce qu'il y a dans le garage?'
un vélo, une voiture, une mobylette, une moto, un scooter. The question was: 'What is in the garage?' The answer was 'a bike, a car, a moped, a motorcycle, a scooter.' The other choices were irrelevant.

If you were in a French class, and the teacher said 'Mettez vos cahiers sur les bureaux', what did she tell the class to do?
Put your notebooks on your desks.. By the way, the word for teacher in French is 'professeur'.

What are you using to take this quiz?
un ordinateur. If you have spoken French before, you didn't fall for the 'une computeure'...I crack myself up...anyway, I hope you liked the quiz! Thanks for playing.
