Fun Trivia: S : Spielberg, Steven

Special Sub-Topic: S.I. - Spielberg Intelligence

Steven Spielberg grew up in the suburbs of what city?

Phoenix. The bland, tract-home suburbia depicted in such films as E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Poltergeist (which Spielberg produced and cowrote) has its origins in Spielberg's Arizona childhood. Today, of course, he lives in a decidedly more opulent environ, Pacific Palisades, where his neighbors include Tom Hanks and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

What nickname was given to the mechanical shark used for Jaws?
Bruce. Fittingly, Spielberg named the razor-toothed beast Bruce ... after his lawyer. Ouch!

After which of his short films did Spielberg name his first production company?
Amblin. Amblin Entertainment was named after Spielberg's acclaimed 26-minute 1968 movie about a young man and woman who meet in the desert and decide to hitchhike to the beach. He expanded upon this early road-movie experience with the white-knuckler TV movie Duel and his first feature, The Sugarland Express. Sugarland stars Goldie Hawn as a young mother who springs her husband from prison, then hits the highway--with authorities in hot pursuit--to retrieve their young son from a foster home. (And as for the beach part, perhaps you've heard of a little thing called Jaws ...)

Harrison Ford was cast as Indiana Jones after Spielberg and George Lucas' first choice for the role was unavailable. Who did they originally want?
Tom Selleck. Unfortunately for Tom Selleck, contractual obligations to the TV series Magnum, P.I. prevented him from donning a hat and brandishing a bullwhip as Indy. While Harrison Ford went on to make Witness, The Fugitive and Air Force One, Selleck's movie career never really took off (with the exception of Three Men and a Baby). Instead, he turned up in Mr. Baseball, Quigley Down Under and as a guest star on Friends.

What was the name of the Spielberg-created, big-budget anthology series that aired on NBC from 1985 to 1987?
Amazing Stories. Given his clout in Hollywood, Spielberg was able to lure top-name talent for his Amazing Stories, which was modeled as a less paranoid Twilight Zone and less scary Night Gallery (for which he directed episodes early in his career). Despite the involvement of such actors as Kevin Costner, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Tim Robbins, John Lithgow and Danny DeVito--not to mention directors such as Tim Burton, Joe Dante, Clint Eastwood, Tobe Hooper, Robert Zemeckis, Martin Scorsese and Spielberg himself--Amazing Stories never seemed to click with audiences, who often clicked elsewhere on the dial instead.

During which of these movies did Steven Spielberg meet his wife, Kate Capshaw?
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The couple first met when Spielberg cast Capshaw as Wilhelmina 'Willie' Scott -- the cabaret performer who's swept into an adventure with Indy and his young Asian sidekick, Short Round -- in 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. After divorcing actress Amy Irving, to whom he was married from 1985 to 1989, Spielberg wed Capshaw, on October 12th, 1991.

In what movie starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi does Spielberg make a cameo appearance as a low-level civic administrator?
The Blues Brothers. Director John Landis, who loves to give fellow directors small roles in his movies, cast Spielberg as the Cook County clerk in his Chicago-set musical romp The Blues Brothers.

"In Close Encounters of the Third Kind", with what food does Richard Dreyfuss sculpt a likeness of "Devil's Tower"?
Mashed potatoes. After witnessing a spacecraft, Dreyfuss' obsession with the image of "Devil's Tower" drives him to create impromptu sculptures from shaving cream, a mound of clay from his child's train set -- and even a pile of mashed potatoes during dinner.

The voice of the alien in E.T. was provided by Pat Walsh, with help from which actress?
Debra Winger. If you thought Debra Winger was all about weepy romance and drama flicks, think again--the actress lent her voice to the world's favorite alien. So, does that mean E.T.'s female?

Steven Spielberg is the godfather of which actress?
Drew Barrymore. Spielberg met Drew Barrymore when he cast her as Gertie in E.T. Little did he know she would grow up to pose for Playboy. When the director found out, he sent Barrymore a blanket so she could 'cover up.'
