    Japan and China. Japan and China had been at war since 1937. Ealier, Japan had invaded Manchuria (part of China) in 1931.

    Czechoslovakia. The infamous Munich agreement was in 1938. This agreement handed over the Sudetenland to Hitler. In March, 1939 Hitler seized the rest of Bohemia and Moravia.

Which country lies directly to the north of Germany and was taken over by the Nazis?
    Denmark. Denmark was invaded in April 1940 while the Germans were on their way to seize Norway.

Which country did Germany invade which brought Britain and France into the war?
    Poland. Britain had a treaty with Poland, undertaking to come to the assistance of the latter if its independence was threatened by military force.

Which country was Hitler most excited about when he heard that this country had fallen under his power? (In fact, there is achive footage of him slapping his thighs with glee and dancing a little jig).
    France. At the outbreak of WWII France was widely regarded as the second most powerful military state in Europe, and its collapse within weeks in May-June 1940 was unexpected and shocking.

    Battle of Britain. This was an air battle between the German Luftwaffe and the Royal Air Force. It was Germany's first defeat in WWII.

Who was the Italian dictator at the time of the war?
    Mussolini. Mussolini wanted Italy to return to the glory and power of the early Roman Empire.

Which country lay in the middle of Europe but remained neutral and basically untouched?
    Switzerland. Switzerland was too mountainous for Germany to invade, and Hitler saw nothing of interest in it to take it over.

Which leader had proclaimed 'peace for our time' in 1938?
    Chamberlain. Chamberlain's proclamation was disproven just a year later. It has become commonplace to quote this (inaccurately) as 'peace in our time'.

    Churchill. This famous quotation was in reference to the Battle of Britain.

    Eisenhower. War heroes have often, but not always, become United States Presidents.

    Ireland. The Republic of Ireland was neutral in WWII, as were also Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. (Turkey was neutral till January 1945, when it declared war on Germany - a rather meaningless gesture at that stage in the war).

    Sea Lion. This operation was one the first defeats that the Germans tasted during World War II.

    Normandy. This gave us the famous 'Normandy Landings'.

Who was the leader of the USSR during World War II?
    Stalin. Stalin ruled with an iron fist.
