Fun Trivia: S : Something in Common

Special Sub-Topic: Tinkerbell in the Movies

Who played the mischievous pixie in the 1924 movie adaptation of "Peter Pan"?

Virginia Brown Faire. Virginia Brown Faire portrayed the pixie "Tinker Bell" in the 1924, black and white movie adaptation of "Peter Pan". Betty Bronson was responsible for playing the role of "Peter". It is very common for a woman to play the role of the boy who never grew up and the role was first portrayed by an actual boy in the 1953 Disney adaptation of "Peter Pan".

What is the name "Tinkerbell" usually shortened to in several of the movie adaptations?
Tink. "Tinkerbell" is often shortened to "Tink" in several movies, including the 1953 Disney adaptation, and in the 2003 movie (in fact, the character is officially listed as "Tink" in the IMDB credits).

Does Tinkerbell ever speak in the 1953 Disney adaptation of "Peter Pan"?
    n. No, Tinkerbell remains pretty silent as far as normal speech goes. Her "voice" is merely the sounds of bells ringing but she does not have a real speaking role as we know it. Tinkerbell has, for the most part, been a non-speaking role in other movie adaptations and on the stage. This trend is broken by the 1991 movie "Hook", which features Julia Roberts as a pretty verbose "Tinkerbell".

Many people have believed that Disney based their version of "Tinkerbell" on Marilyn Monroe. Is this urban legend actually true?
    n. Despite the pixie's similarities to the actress Marilyn Monroe, "Tinkerbell" was actually based on Margaret Kelly, a 22 year-old actress who provided the live-action reference for the animators. Her measurements were 35-25-36, and her husband instantly recognised Kelly's hips when he saw the pixie on screen. The Disney team have also pointed out that Marilyn Monroe was not yet a famous actress at the time that they started production on their animated feature. But you still have to admit the resemblence is uncanny!

Which major Hollywood actress played the role of "Tinkerbell" in the 1991 movie "Hook"?
Julia Roberts. Julia Roberts played the pixie in the 1991 movie "Hook" set years after the original "Peter Pan" story, and in a future where Peter decided to leave Never Land and grow up. Julia Roberts was apparently nicknamed "Tinker-hell" as she was very difficult to work with. (Information courtesy of IMDB)

On a side note, Gwyneth Paltrow did also appear in "Hook", as the younger Wendy.

What is different about the "Tinkerbell" in the 1991 movie "Hook"?
She talks. Tinkerbell actually talks in the movie "Hook", and quite a bit, I may add! Unlike some of the earlier and later adaptations, Tinkberbell is also not blonde. Julia Roberts' "Tinkerbell" looks more of a brunette.

In the 2002 Disney sequel "Return to Never Land", Tinkerbell tries to befriend which little girl?
Jane. In this Disney sequel, Tinkerbell and Peter Pan meet Wendy's daughter, Jane. Jane has a very hard time believing that Never Land is real and pretty much kills Tinkerbell by her insistence that she does not believe in fairies. Tinkerbell is revived when everyone starts shouting that they *do* believe in fairies.

Kylie Minogue appears as the "Green Fairy", a clear spoof of Tinkerbell in which musical movie?
Moulin Rouge. Kylie Minogue makes a short appearance in Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge" as the "Green Fairy". Clearly spoofing the Disney version of Tinkerbell, Kylie sports a similar skimpy green dress and wings for the part and joins Ewan McGregor and friends in singing their rendition of "The Sounds of Music". A little trivia point : Ozzy Osbourne provides the scream that is heard when the fairy turns evil! (Information courtesy of IMDB).

Which actress portrays the pixie in the 2003 version of "Peter Pan"?
Ludivine Sagnier. The French actress Ludivine Sagnier portrayed the pixie in the 2003 adaptation of "Peter Pan". Her previous appearances include "Swimming Pool", among a number of French movies.

Rachel Hurd-Wood plays the role of "Wendy" in the 2003 movie, while Carsen Gray plays the Native American princess, "Tiger Lily". Monica Bellucci makes no appearances in this movie.

In the 2003 "Peter Pan" movie, the character of "Tinkerbell" is all live-action.
    f. Tinkerbell in the 2003 version is a combination of both live-action and CGI. Ludivine Sagnier's portrayal is mostly seen when the pixie is shown close-up, while the character is CGI animated for the rest of it.

That's about it, folks! I hope you've enjoyed my "Tinkerbell in the Movies" quiz and learnt a thing or two. Just remember, it's first star to the right and straight on 'til morning!
