Fun Trivia: N : NBA Drafts and Trades

Special Sub-Topic: Who Drafted Him?

Which team drafted Steve Francis 2nd overall in the 1999 draft, and traded him to the Houston Rockets?

Vancouver Grizzlies. The Maryland standout said he wouldn't play for Vancouver. Francis got his wish when the Grizzlies traded him to Houston in a three team, eleven player deal that summer.

Despite being drafted 12th overall in the 1972 draft, Julius Erving decided to sign as an undrafted free agent with the ABAs Virginia Squires. What NBA team selected him 12th in the 1972 draft?
Milwaukee Bucks. Julius Erving eventually came to the NBA in 1976. Imagine if he did sign with the Bucks, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, and Dr. J on the same team.

Pistons star Chauncey Billups was drafted 3rd overall in the 1997 draft. What team drafted this "Mr. Big Shot"?
Boston Celtics. In one of many not so smart moves made by Rick Pitino with the Celtics, he traded Billups midway through his first season in the league. Billups then bounced around the league and he ended up with the Pistons in 2002.

Dirk Nowitzki, the first European born player to ever win a MVP, was drafted 9th overall in the 1998 draft. Which team drafted him?
Milwaukee Bucks. Dirk was traded on draft day to the Mavs for Robert Traylor.

The third pick of the 2001 draft was forward-center Pau Gasol. Which team drafted him?
Atlanta Hawks. On draft day, Pau Gasol's draft rights were traded to the Grizzlies for Shareef Abdur-Rahim.

Ray Allen, who started off his career with the Milwaukee Bucks, was not drafted by them. What team drafted Allen with the 5th pick in the 1996 draft?
Minnesota Timberwolves. Ray Allen was traded on draft day to the Bucks for Stephon Marbury.

Penny Hardaway was runner-up for Rookie of the Year with the Magic in 1994, but Orlando didn't draft him. What team selected Hardaway 3rd overall in the 1993 draft?
Golden State Warriors. On draft day, Penny Hardaway was traded to the Magic for Chris Webber, the first pick in that draft.

In 1956, Bill Russell was drafted 2nd overall in the draft, not by the Celtics, but by which team?
St. Louis Hawks. This draft day trade wasn't as one sided as it seemed. The Hawks acquired Hall of Famers Ed MaCauley and Cliff Hagan in the deal. With Hagan, Macauley, and Bob Pettit, St. Louis won the 1958 NBA title. But, it was the Celtics who got the last laugh by winning 11 championships in 13 seasons with Russell.

Six-time NBA champion Scottie Pippen was drafted 5th overall in the 1987 draft. Which team drafted him?
Seattle Supersonics. Pippen was traded on draft day to the Bulls for Olden Polynice. This trade was incredibly one-sided.

Although known for his Hall of Fame career as a Celtic, Robert Parish was selected 8th in the 1976 draft and played the first four years of his career with which team?
Golden State Warriors. In 1980, the Celtics traded their first overall pick to the Warriors for Parish and the third pick in the draft. Golden State chose Joe Barry Carrol and Boston chose Kevin McHale. This is one of the most lopsided trades in NBA history.
