    Mary Beth Lacey. 'Cagney and Lacey' ran in the 1980s. The two detectives were partners in the New York police force. The series dealt with the women's efforts to do their job in a male-dominated department, as well as many issues affecting working women. Christine Cagney was played by Loretta Swit in the pilot episode, and by Meg Foster and then Sharon Gless in the series.

Who played the role of Jim Bergerac?
    John Nettles. 'Bergerac' was set on Jersey, in the Channel Islands. One of the main problems with the series was that there was so much crime on such a tiny island that it was not the most realistic of shows. However, it was still very watchable. John Nettles was born in 1943, in Cornwall, England.

David Suchet played the role of the Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. Who wrote the stories this series was based on?
    Agatha Christie & Christie. David Suchet plays Poirot in the television series, as well as in several television movies. He received the OBE in 2002, and was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1999. He has also appeared as Inspector Japp in the 1985 movie 'Thirteen At Dinner', also based on an Agatha Christie novel.

The detective Albert Campion was played by which former 'Doctor Who' star?
    Peter Davison. Campion was created by writer Margery Allingham. He was a mild mannered gentleman, yet able to solve even the most baffling cases. He was helped by his manservant, Lugg, who was played by Brian Glover. Peter Davison also starred in the popular series 'All Creatures Great and Small'.

Which detectives were played by Michael Brandon and Glynis Barber?
    Dempsey and Makepeace. Michael Brandon played James Dempsey and Glynis Barber was Harriet Makepeace. Dempsey had been a Manhattan policeman who shot and killed his partner and was then reassigned to Great Britain. His new partner was Makepeace, an upper-crust detective, and the pair disliked one another on sight. They still managed to crack difficult cases together, and as time passed, they grew to like each other!

What was the name of the detective played by Richard Boone in the eponymous detective show?
    Hec Ramsey. The series 'Hec Ramsey' was set at the turn of the century and had a western feel to it. Former gun-slinger Hec Ramsey accepted a job as deputy to an inexperienced Police Chief in Oklahoma. He was interested in the persuit of justice, using the new science of criminology. He solved many cases in New Prospect in the two years the series ran.

What was the name of the detective played by James Garner in 'The Rockford Files'?
    Jim. Jim Rockford had been imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. On his release he set up his own detective agency, called The Rockford Files. He worked in Los Angeles, living first in a trailer near the beach. Jim would rather have spent his time fishing than solving crimes, and his father was always nagging him to get a proper job. The show ran for six seasons.

Which series starred Lewis Collins as Bodie and Martin Shaw as Doyle?
    The Professionals. At the time it was shown in Britain - in the 1970s and 1980s - 'The Professionals' was one of the most popular television shows. CI5 (Criminal Intelligence 5) was an organisation founded by George Cowley (Gordon Jackson) to help fight rising crime in London. Bodie was formerly in the SAS and was very tough, while Doyle was a former police constable and was the more placid of the pair.

Who played Laura Holt in 'Remington Steele'?
    Stephanie Zimbalist. Laura Holt had opened a detective agency, but felt that people did not take a woman seriously. She invented a superior for herself, called Remington Steele. Pierce Brosnan is famous for playing the man who adopted the identity of Remington Steele, and for losing the role of James Bond because of his prior commitment to the series.

Who played the role of David Addison Jr. in the series 'Moonlighting'?
    Bruce Willis. Bruce Willis starred with Cybill Shepherd in the series 'Moonlighting'. The story is set in the Blue Moon Detective Agency. David Addison persuades model Maddie Hayes not to sell the agency, but to take him on as a partner. Together the unlikely pair solved many cases in the five seasons they were together.
