Answer: Boston Pilgrims

Along with 1st place Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League, Boston was the only other team to win over 90 games, both winning 91. Boston won the American League by a convincing 14.5 games over Philadelphia. Boston was known as many names back then including the Americans, the Puritans, the Pilgrims, and later the Red Sox.

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

Not as convincing as the Boston Pilgrims of the American League, Pittsburgh only won by 6.5 games over the New York Giants.

3. In 2004, the World Series was a best-of-seven competition. However, the Series in 1903 was a best of how many games?

Answer: 9

Although many a year a different amount of games were played, the 1903 Series began it all as a nine game Series. This Series did not need all nine games however, with Boston winning in 8 games, 5-3 over Pittsburgh.

4. Who was the starting pitcher in game one for the American League Champions?

Answer: Cy Young

Young started the first game after winning 28 games, and leading the American League in the regular season. However, he was beat in the first game, but came back and won in his next two starts. Dineen won three times for Boston. Hughes pitched only once, and Gibson not at all, despite winning 13 games during the regular season.

5. Who was the starting pitcher in game one for the National League Champions?

Answer: Deacon Phillipe

Leever led the Pirates with 25 wins during the regular season and Phillipe won 24, but Phillipe got the start for the first game of the Series, beating Cy Young and the Pilgrims 7-3. Phillipe won his first three starts and lost his last two, and was the only Pirate to win any games.

Although it was very common for pitchers to complete nearly all of their games back then, the odd time a "reliever" was used, though not in the same sense as today. Pittsburgh used relievers twice and Boston once during the Series. Interestingly, Cy Young relieved 'Long Tom' Hughes in game three for Boston, only two days after pitching a complete game loss in game one.

7. What was the Series-leading batting average (with minimum 25 at bats)?

Answer: .333

Although averages were somewhat lower than 2004, surprisingly Jimmy Sebring of Pittsburgh went 10-30 during the Series. Chick Stahl led Boston with a .303 BA, also going 10-33.

Although one might think that errors were not regularly kept as a statistic that long ago, they indeed were. Each of the eight games had at least one error recorded. In fact, there were seven alone in game 7. Also seven runs scored for Boston. Not a lucky night that night.

Both shutouts occurred in Boston, and both were won by Boston. Both were 3-0 scores, and both were complete game wins by Bill Dineen.
