1. 'The first I heard of the beach was in Bangkok, on the Khao San Road'. I was innocent then, and never imagined that a small map could cause so much trouble. I just wanted an experience, and boy did I get one. You see, 'I've never grown out of playing pretend'; my imagination is vivid and can sometimes play tricks on me. But I was responsible for leading Zeph and Sammy to their deaths, and I killed Christo to save Jed. The beach nearly drove me crazy, and I was one of the lucky ones. Who am I? On my wrist I have a tiny dolphin tattoo, which is half-hidden by my watch-strap, and I am a strong swimmer. Although I have a boyfriend, I was drawn to Richard, and we have shared a passionate kiss. On arriving at the beach I settled in quickly and soon made friends. Following the drama involving the Swedes, I didn't know initially if I wanted to leave the island. I never put tobacco in my joints, for fear of getting addicted to smoking, and I was an American Harvard student studying law. 6. I was born in South Africa, and before I discovered the beach I was a carpenter by trade. I was much respected on the island as I ran the carpenters and I was also Sal's boyfriend. 7. 'If there was a leader' on the island, then I suppose it was me. Whenever I spoke, people listened. I spent my days wandering around the lagoon, 'checking on the different work details and making sure things were running smoothly'. I was the organiser, the "mother" if you like. I made hard decisions for the good of everyone on the island. I was a master of lies and I never relaxed. The only time I ever smoked or drank was during Tet. My days were usually spent alone, and I was 'usually the first person to leave in the mornings and the last person to come back'. I was constantly alert and acted as the guardian of the beach.
