Answer: Mount Sinai

Moses received the Commandments on Mount Sinai (Exodus 19-20). Today Mount Sinai is thought to be located in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. There is a collection of peaks there, but it is the peak of Mount Moses that is commonly thought to be the place where Moses received the Commandments.

Answer: I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt have no strange gods before Me...

The first Commandment states that there is only one God and one God alone and people should not adore any other Gods, nor should they make any idols. In Luke 4:8, Jesus says, 'It is written: "You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve."'

Answer: Don't desire your neighbour's wife for yourself.

The numbering of the Ten Commandments varies slightly from religion to religion. Roman Catholics and Lutherans follow the order given by Augustine of Hippo. Jews and many Protestants view this commandment as part of the tenth commandment.

Answer: The Decalogue

The English name "Decalogue" comes from the Greek word "dekalogos" which means "ten terms". Incidentally, "The Decalogue" is also a series of one-hour films by the Polish director Krzysztof Kieoelowski based on the Ten Commandments.

Answer: Thou shalt not steal.

The seventh Commandment says you shall not take anything that does not belong to you, whether it's from the rich or the poor. Taking or keeping a neighbour's goods breaks the seventh Commandment.

Answer: Exodus and Deuteronomy

Exodus and Deuteronomy are two books of the five Books of Moses, which are also known as the Law, Torah, or Pentateuch. The Ten Commandments are given in passages in Exodus 20:2-17, Exodus 34:11-27 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21.

Answer: Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.

In the Catholic Church, Sunday is the Sabbath day, therefore Catholics are supposed to worship God and do no work on this day. Exodus 20:8 says, "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.

In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates".

Answer: Two tablets of stone

This information can be found in Exodus 31:18. I've heard it said that Moses was the first person to break the commandments. After receiving the Commandments, Moses came down from the mountain to find the people adoring false gods, so he smashed the two tablet on the ground with rage. (Exodus 32:19)

Answer: Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

Here, the Commandment says you should not take God's name without good reason, such as using it in cursing or bad language. Many other churches count this as the third Commandment.

Answer: Honour thy father and thy mother.

This Commandment says you should respect and honour your parents. After all, they bought you into this world and raised and cared for you. In the way that many non-Catholics count the Commandments, this is the fifth Commandment.
