There hasn't been a Secret Seven meeting for a while. Jack's little sister, Susie has found out their latest password, so Peter calls a meeting to choose a new one. The password is changed to "Beware". Another password is suggested but Jack won't let them use it because it's about Susie's annoying habit. What password do they NOT use?
While they wait for an adventure to come along, the children decide to practice their detective skills. They all go out to practice observing people and describing what they see. George puts on dark clothes, paints his face black and takes a toy truncheon along. He follows an old man getting off the bus, but another man is following George! What happens next?
George is taken to the police station and locked in the cells

Peter and Jack say they hid in a tree and watched, but they didn't see much. A man drove up in a car and got out. He had a poodle with him that looked like it was car-sick. After a while the man drove off again. The car registration was PSD 188. Jack says he remembered this easily by thinking of a funny phrase. What was it?

While Colin is doing his shadowing task, he follows a man out walking with a bull terrier dog. The dog does not look happy. The man takes the dog down an alleyway and then comes back out without it! What happens next?

The boys go to find the man who followed George - Mr Taylor. He doesn't care that George had to leave the Secret Seven, and tells them to "clear off". Afterwards, Colin says he is the same man he saw with the disappearing bull terrier! They go down the alley to look for the dog. What do they find that Colin didn't see?

The building looks empty apart from a light in one window. The boys see a man come out of the front door and catch a bus to Pilberry. He is bent over, walks with a limp and has a deformed hand! They head home to tell the others but another man almost walks into them. It's Mr Taylor, carrying a dog lead, but no dog! What happens next?
They follow Mr Taylor and he leads them to a room full of dogs - caught red handed.
They try and follow Mr Taylor but Colin falls down a hole.

They follow Mr Taylor and he catches them. He says he'll take them to the police but doesn't.
The children work out that Mr Taylor is stealing expensive breeds of dogs and must be hiding them somewhere in the cellar. He can't be working alone. The girls check the newspapers for 'lost and found' notices, and the boys go and explore the cellar. They find a room full of unhappy dogs in cages! What happens next?
The police come and catch the boys and think they have been stealing the dogs

The boys end up locked in cages too
The dogs escape and bite Mr Taylor
At the end of the book, George is allowed to join the Secret Seven again. What makes his dad change his mind?
