Known for his flagrant romancing and promiscuity, it is believed he was treated for the disease in 1927, but never cured. He was in a partially vegetative, demented state during the last 18 months of his life, dying on Jan 25, 1947 at the age of 48 at his Miami home.

There are those who question syphilis as the cause of death. Nevertheless, on November 16, 1939, Al Capone was released from Alcatraz after having served seven years, six months and fifteen days, having paid all fines and back taxes.
