Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sliced her snack

Answer: charles dickens

Charles Dickens, was the son of John and Elizabeth Dickens, and was born in Landport on 7th February 1812. Charles was the second of seven children.
Early in his life, his father, John Dickens worked as a clerk at the Navy pay office in Portsmouth.
In 1822 the family moved to Camden Town in London, where sadly John Dickens was sent to prison for non payment of debts.
Charles, now aged twelve, managed to find work in a factory, where he was paid six shillings (around 15 US cents) a week.
At age 15, Charles found work as an office boy with a firm of solicitors (lawyers) but he hated the work. In the evenings, he used to enjoy walking the streets, observing the people of London, which no doubt gave him an excellent insight for the novels he went on to write.
2. Mac via oasis

Answer: isaac asimov

Isaac Asimov was born in Petrovichi, Russia, in 1920.
A brilliant man, Asimov was a long-time member, and Vice President of Mensa International. He was also the very proud president of the American Humanist Association.

Ray Douglas Bradbury was born in Waukegan, Illinois, on August 22 1920, and was the third son of Leonard Spaulding Bradbury, and Esther Marie Moberg Bradbury. He was given the middle name Douglas, after the actor, Douglas Fairbanks.

"Montag enjoys his job as a professional book burner, but he begins to question his duties, when he learns of a time when books were legal, and people did not live in fear. Montag begins stealing books marked for destruction, and meets a professor who agrees to educate him. When his pilfering is discovered, he must run for his life". This is the plot for Bradbury's excellent book "Fahrenheit 451".
4. Nonskid icy mile

Answer: emily dickinson

During her lifetime, Emily Dickinson was virtually unknown as a poet. She was actually better known as a gardener - the garden at her family home was well known locally. She studied botany from the age of nine, and as a teenager she put together an herbarium consisting of over 400 pressed flowers, classified using the Linnaean system.

The herbarium has been preserved at the Houghton Library at Harvard University.
5. Ah Hanna! lower the tin

Answer: nathaniel hawthorne

Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts. He is best known perhaps, for his stories about the American colonial days.
6. Sting me anywhere

Answer: ernest hemingway

Hemingway was a brilliant and somewhat controversial writer. His family life was much troubled, with many of his family committing suicide, as he himself did. It is believed that this was caused by members of Hemingway's paternal line having a genetic condition known as haemochromatosis, which causes severe anxiety and depression.
7. Haul ex US oldy

Answer: aldous huxley

A quote from Huxley on religion and magic ...

"You never see animals going through the absurd and often horrible fooleries of magic and religion. . . . Dogs do not ritually urinate in the hope of persuading heaven to do the same and send down rain. Asses do not bray a liturgy to cloudless skies. Nor do cats attempt, by abstinence from cat's meat, to wheedle the feline spirits into benevolence. Only man behaves with such gratuitous folly. It is the price he has to pay for being intelligent but not, as yet, quite intelligent enough."

As the quiz writer, I am simply quoting Huxley, I do not necessarily agree with, or condone this quote!
8. I drank ugly drip

Answer: rudyard kipling
