Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dog

A kennel is a house made especially for dogs. Some dogs live outside all the time and it is their only area to get shelter. Others live inside but spend some time outside and it is there if they want to use it. It usually has a blanket which has their own scent so they know it is their special place where they can feel safe and secure.

Some people have a crate inside the house that they keep for their dogs to have a safe place to go but these are smaller than kennels, with just enough room for the dog to turn around.
2. Cow

A barn is a building found on a farm. It is a place to store hay and grain to keep it dry as well as a home for animals. They are built differently depending on what the farmer needs it for. They usually have different areas inside them for different things.

They are used for other farm animals besides cows, like sheep and goats. If it is a small farm without the extra special farm buildings mentioned, then it could hold horses, pigs and chickens too.
3. Bird

A bird's nest is a place where it lays its eggs and raises its babies. We usually think of a nest in a tree that the bird makes itself like in the picture, but some birds just use things that already exist, like a hole in the sand. Some birds, like the auk, lay them straight on rocky ledges on a cliff and they have eggs that have a pointy end so they don't roll off!
4. Mouse

In the wild mice build themselves burrows to live in, but when people keep them as pets we use a special mouse cage. The cage must be made of a material that lets in lots of air like wire or mesh, except for the floor which has to be solid or it hurts their feet.

They like to build nests and to burrow, so the floor needs to be covered in something they can use like hay, wood chips or shredded paper. Mice are very active, so it is important to give them things to play with like exercise wheels, tubes, ladders and things to climb on.
5. Pig

A pigsty is really just a fenced area full of bare dirt or mud. Some have shelters for them to live in but not all of them do. Pigs need an area like this so they can roll around in the mud to keep themselves cool because they can't sweat like we can. They will dig out any plants or roots to eat them so nothing green is left and they dig all the time, so their home always looks like a mess to people.
6. Bee

A beehive is any closed structure in which honeybees live and raise their young. When the bees make their own hives they attach them to caves or hollow trees but in warmer countries they make hanging hives like in the picture. There are also lots of different types of hives made by people for them to live in.

Inside the hive the bees build six sided cells made out of beeswax which is called honeycomb. The bees use these areas to store honey and pollen and their offspring.
7. Cat

Cats like to sleep on soft places like beds and couches so don't actually need a special home, but they do often like a spot that is just their own and they feel secure if it has sides around it. Some cat beds are called igloos and are totally covered except for an opening in the front for them to get into.

They also like to sleep in high places, particularly if there are other pets or young children in the home, so they feel safe to let down their guard and sleep.
8. Chicken

A chicken coop is a building in which a small number of poultry are kept. There are usually nest boxes inside for the chickens to lay their eggs.

There are two types people have depending on the weather. One is like a house with one whole side left off and covered in wire so they can get lots of fresh air. The other is a closed house with doors and windows that can be opened or closed depending on how hot or cold it is.

Some chicken coops are in the open air so they can wander around wherever they want or they are inside a fenced chicken run to keep them safe from predators like foxes.
9. Fish

A place where fish are kept as pets is called an aquarium. Fish bowls are the smallest type and then fish tanks like the one in the picture. They are usually made of glass or acrylic material.

They need to have a way of cleaning the water and a pump that puts oxygen into it. Most also need a light and a heater or cooler depending on where you live.

People usually put things in the tank to keep the fish entertained and make it like the ocean or river they come from. These are things like rocks, wood, coral, plants, caves and often funny decorations like pirate ships.
10. Horse

A stable is a building where horses are kept. There are many types of them. Some are inside a closed building like a barn while others are in a row with stable doors to the outside. Stable doors can be totally opened to let the horse out or just the top half open so the horses can put their heads outside.

They can be built of wood, brick or even steel like a shed. The floors are usually made of concrete or something else that can be easily washed and then covered with something soft like straw. Some have haylofts on a second story with a big opening to throw the hay outside.

Inside they are divided into separate areas called stalls so that each horse has their own place and they often have a special stall that is bigger called a box stall where they put sick horses or those that have a foal.
