Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which wartime poet ended one of his most famous works with the thought-provoking Latin phrase, "Dulce et decorum est; Pro patria mori"?

Answer: Wilfred Owen

Wilfred Owen is famous for his vivid characterisation of war and its associated suffering. In 'Dulce et Decorum Est' he borrows a Latin phrase from Horace, a translation of which is "it is sweet and fitting to die for one's country". Owen precedes this with an unequivocal fragment - "the old lie".

Wilfred Owen died in 1918.
2. Which famous American businessman and CEO would certainly not have "reneged" on the terms of his reported $417 million severance payment received upon his retirement from General Electric?

Answer: Jack Welch

Massachusetts-born Jack Welch worked his way up the ranks at General Electric, from being a junior chemical engineer in the 1960s to his appointment to the ultimate executive role - CEO - in the early 1980s. He is well-known for a somewhat ruthless performance-oriented approach to recruitment, retention and reward as well as for implementing simplification policies such as reducing the inefficiently large number of management layers at the company.

The word "welch" can mean to renege or not fulfill an obligation or commitment.
3. You certainly wouldn't hear a vehicle go "choo choo" along the Walnut Street Bridge, an impressive structure for pedestrians spanning the Tennessee River in which city?

Answer: Chattanooga

There are a number of bridges in Chattanooga that allow vehicles to pass from one side of the Tennessee River to the other. The Walnut Street Bridge however is not for cars which gives pedestrians the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll across the river. Edwin Thatcher was the chief engineer responsible for construction in 1890 and the bridge has an impressive span of 724m.

'Chattanooga Choo Choo' is a famous hit - originally recorded by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra - that follows a train on its journey from New York to Chattanooga on the Tennessee/Georgia border.
4. Though much debated, which revelatory apostle, the son of Zebedee, is associated with the designation of "Beloved Disciple" or "the disciple whom Jesus loved"?

Answer: John

The life and times of John the Apostle is a source of engaging debate giving rise to a variety of different interpretations. For centuries, biblical scholars have been wrestling with questions such as "did John the Apostle author the 'Book of Revelation'?", "did John the Apostle write the 'Gospel of John'?" as well as the broader catch-all, "who is John?".

In amongst these big questions sits the matter of "the disciple whom Jesus loved". The 'Gospel of John' provides references and suggestions as to the identity of the "Beloved Disciple" but falls short of explicitly revealing who exactly this mysterious person is. Whilst it would be appropriate to say that the "Beloved Disciple" is associated with John the Apostle, going any further will require you to get your debating hat on!
5. What name connects the main character in 'A Clockwork Orange' with Mr. Rider from the popular novels penned by Anthony Horowitz?

Answer: Alex

English author Anthony Horowitz has become a staple in the teen literature world and this is in large part down to the 'Alex Rider' series of novels. The first entry into the canon was 'Stormbreaker' back in 2000, soon followed by 'Point Blanc' (2001) and 'Skeleton Key' (2002). The 'Alex Rider' series has translated well to television and streaming, with both Amazon Prime Video and IMDb TV adapting the Horowitz novels into engaging thriller series starring Otto Farrant.

'A Clockwork Orange' - a controversial dystopian novel by Anthony Burgess - features a narrator named Alex who delights in the sociopathic aspects of life. The novel was published in 1962 and adapted for filmic release in 1971.
6. Which of these good men, a shining beacon of success, achieved the greatest combined number of Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor?

Answer: Jack Nicholson

Jack Nicholson, known for his memorable performances in 'A Few Good Men' (1992, "You can't handle the truth") and 'The Shining' (1980, "Here's Johnny!"), received his twelfth Academy Award Nomination in an acting category in 2003 for his portrayal of the central character - a retiring actuary - in 'About Schmidt'. This didn't translate into a win for Nicholson, but he had already bagged three Oscars for Best Actor for his performances in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' (1975, awarded 1976), 'Terms of Endearment' (1983, awarded 1984) and 'As Good As it Gets' (1997, awarded 1998).

The other three brilliant actors amassed 27 nominations between them with Olivier picking up 10, Tracy obtaining 9 and Brando achieving 8.
7. Evan Dando was the lead singer in an alternative rock band whose name contains which fruit with citrus zing?

Answer: Lemon

Evan Dando was the frontman for The Lemonheads, a band originating in Boston, Massachusetts that were best known for their cover songs that fared well on the US Billboard Modern Rock chart (also known at other times as the Alternative Songs and Alternative Airplay chart). The Lemonheads peaked in 1993 with their cover version of 'Into Your Arms' that topped the Modern Rock chart for nine successive weeks.

Other than breaking into the top twenty of the UK charts with 'Into Your Arms' and a cover of 'Mrs. Robinson', The Lemonheads didn't make much traction with an international audience.
8. Which South African golfer achieved the prestigious Career Grand Slam upon winning the U.S. Open in 1965?

Answer: Gary Player

Gary Player became just the third golfer to achieve the feat of winning the Masters, U.S. Open, The Open and PGA Championship during their career, completing this particular mission in 1965. In completing the Career Grand Slam, Player followed in the footsteps of two Americans, Gene Sarazen and Ben Hogan; he was very shortly thereafter joined by another American, Jack Nicklaus, who achieved the same magnificent feat in 1966.

Colin Montgomerie was a Scottish golfer known for his solid record at the Ryder Cup, the sport's biennial clash between Europe and the US.
9. Which of the following words starts with a letter that would bank you four points in Scrabble if you exclude any multipliers?

Answer: Yakitori

Of the four options, only "yakitori" - the skewered Japanese delicacy of grilled chicken meat or offal - begins with a letter that has a face value of four points in Scrabble.

C = 3, K = 5, Y = 4, Z = 10
10. In 1965, which Scottish motorsports legend - whose life was cut short in a racing accident in Germany - celebrated wins at both the Formula 1 World Championship and the Indianapolis 500?

Answer: Jim Clark

Jim Clark is remembered for his incredible versatility; 1965 really was an extraordinary year for the Scotsman as he became the first non-American to win the Indianapolis 500 in 45 years and secured the F1 World Championship against stiff competition from the likes of Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart.

Clark is also remembered for a tragic accident in Germany in 1968. He died from injuries sustained from a crash at the Hockenheimring. He was 32 years old.
