The phrase was first used back in the 1800s when the First Continental Railroad was built. Since every one at the time traveled by horseback it was fitting to dub the first train as the "Iron Horse". Hall of Fame baseball player Lou Gehrig had the nickname due to the fact that he played in so many consecutive games.

In Myrtle Beach, SC there is a rollercoaster called the "Iron Horse". It is also used to describe a bicycle manufacturer, a band, a poem and a community in California.
