Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ANIMALS: Archaeozoology indicates that the dog was the first domesticated animal.

Answer: True

The dog was first domesticated approximately 15,000 years ago. However, it is known to have happened no later than 7,000B.C. The original purpose for domesticating the dog is unknown. However, after domesticating the dog, it was able to provide people fur and food, and it was able to guard humans.
2. BRAIN TEASERS: Find the breed of dog in the sentence below My daughter, Bea, gleamed when she learned she owned a dog that was the same breed as the one found in the "Peanuts" comic strip.

Answer: beagle

daughter, BEA, GLEamed
The beagle is a small dog and resembles a Foxhound, although there are several differences, such as the head of a beagle being broader. The temperament of a beagle is neither aggressive nor timid. Since beagles are scent hounds, they have been used for tracking and hunting, although they can also be used as pets.
Snoopy, the dog from the "Peanuts" comic strip, is regarded as the world's most famous beagle.
3. FOR CHILDREN: In the television series "Wishbone", what is the name of Wishbone's owner?

Answer: Joe

Wishbone was a Jack Russell terrier owned by Joe Talbot. Although the other characters couldn't hear him, the viewers were able to do so. Each episode consisted of Wishbone reading a story and assuming a role in the story (usually but not always the lead).

His owner, Joe, along with his friends, Samantha Kepler and David Barnes, would be part of a plot that closely tied to whatever was happening in the story.
4. GENERAL: What is the fear of dogs called?

Answer: cynophobia

Cynophobia, the fear of dogs, is a common phobia, especially in countries where a large number of dogs can be found. Some may even get afraid when either thinking about dogs or seeing a picture of a dog. Most of the time, this fear begins in childhood but there have been a few instances where an adult develops this fear.
5. HISTORY: Dogs were associated with which Egyptian god?

Answer: Anubis

Anubis, the Egyptian god of death, is associated with a dog. Like most Egyptian gods, he has the head of an animal. In his case, it is that of a jackal. His job is to weigh the heart to determine what should happen to the spirit once a person dies. By the Middle Kingdom, he was replaced by Osiris, whom in some versions, is either Anubis's father or uncle.
6. HOBBIES: In which of the following games is a dog involved?

Answer: Monopoly

You can find a dog while playing Monopoly. The playing pieces consist of a dog, along with other objects, such as an iron, wheelbarrow, thimble, and car. The breed of dog is a Scottish Terrier and was added as a playing piece in the early 1950s. According to a 1998 Hasbro poll, the dog is the second most popular playing piece, with the race car being the only playing piece more popular than the dog.
7. MOVIES: In the 1999 version of the movie "Annie", why did Annie say the dog was named Sandy?

Answer: His fur was sandy-colored.

Annie ran away from the orphanage and was later greeted by a dog. However, a police officer was chasing the dog. Annie told the police officer that the dog was hers and he was named Sandy, since his fur was sandy-colored. When Sandy responded to Annie, the police officer was convinced and let them go. Sandy continued to live with Annie and stayed by her side even after she was adopted by Oliver Warbucks.
8. SCI/TECH: Which of the following constellations is in the shape of a dog?

Answer: Canis Major

Canis Major, Latin for greater dog, is in the shape of a dog. The constellation has many bright stars, but the brightest of the stars is Sirius. It is usually found near the constellation Orion, as if it was following the constellation. In fact, Canis Major is considered one of Orion's hunting dogs. The stars in the constellation are bright enough to be seen without a telescope.
9. TELEVISION: In which "Star Trek" series did the captain bring his dog along with him?

Answer: Enterprise

In "Star Trek: Enterprise", Captain Jonathan Archer brought his pet beagle, Porthos, along with him. He was named after one of the musketeers from "The Three Musketeers" by Alexander Dumas. On one particular away mission, Porthos was brought along but he ended up peeing on a sacred tree.
While Captain Janeway did have a dog, she left the dog (Mollie) with her fiance, Mark.
10. WORLD: Which United States president had a dog that has the same name as an Egyptian pharaoh?

Answer: Herbert Hoover

Herbert Hoover owned a dog (a German Shepherd), which he named King Tut, after the Egyptian pharaoh of the same name. Some believed that King Tut was a reason that Hoover was elected president. Whenever Hoover and King Tut appeared, while Hoover was running for president, it made voters view Hoover as a friendly gentleman. King Tut remained by Hoover's side at all times except when he was patrolling the White House to make sure there was no danger.
