Thematic Dogs Trivia Questions

1. A dog may be man's best friend, but it's not unheard of for dogs to snack on people. In the Bible, who was the Queen of Israel, wife of Ahab, who suffered the gruesome fate of being thrown out of a window and her remains being eaten by dogs?

From Quiz
Who Let the Dogs Eat?

Answer: Jezebel

The story is recounted in 1 Kings, that Jezebel was a Phoenician princess who married King Ahab. She instituted the worship of pagan gods, which Biblical prophets tended to frown upon, to put it mildly. Eventually, Ahab died in battle and the prophet Elisha decided that Jezebel must be punished for her naughtiness and anointed a new king named Jehu, who took control of the country. Jezebel mocked him by comparing him to a former king who had reigned for only a week, so he ordered her servants to give her the heave-ho out the royal palace window and she fell to her death. Jehu trampled her body with his horse, but later decided to give her a proper burial. However, by this point it was too late: his servants found only her skull, feet, and the palms of her hands, as stray dogs - not wanting to pass up a free meal - had chowed down on her flesh. There are many lessons that could be drawn from this, the importance of cleaning up after throwing someone into the street being one of them, I guess.

2. "Get down Shep": Which presenter of the British television programme "Blue Peter" had a dog called Shep?

From Quiz Ten Men And Their Dogs

Answer: John Noakes

The children's programme "Blue Peter" was first broadcast in 1958. The concept was that the presenters took part in events and interviewed guests in the studio. In the 1960s, an appearance on the show was welcomed by pop groups for the exposure it offered. The presenters generally had pets in the studio and which lived at home with them. Shep was a Border Collie who was the companion of John Noakes and joined the show in 1971. Both Shep and Noakes left the show in 1978 and both appeared in the series "Go With Noakes" until 1980. Shep died in 1987.

However, high ratings and the popularity of the show saved it, and a fourth season was filmed. The 19th season of the show aired in 2019. Created by Seth MacFarlane who voiced the characters of Peter and Stewie Griffin, and Brian, "The Family Guy" has earned several Primetime Emmy Award nominations for "Outstanding Comedy Series", spawned several spin-off series and in 2013 was voted by TV Guide as the ninth "Greatest TV Cartoon of All Time".

The journey took five and half days and involved 150 dogs and 20 mushers. Balto was the lead dog on the final leg into Nome which led to his hero status. From Quiz Who Let the Dogs Eat?

Answer: "a fool repeats his folly"

Dogs often get a bad rap in the Bible as they were considered unclean animals. In Proverbs, a "fool" refers to someone who is considered ungodly and morally depraved and not necessarily of low intelligence, which is the modern sense of the word. Hence, moral turpitude is being compared to something repulsive like eating vomit despite it being bad for you.

12. Thirty of the first 45 presidents of the USA were dog lovers. Which POTUS had the first FDOTUS to live in the White House?

The fifth president, James Monroe, was the next to have a dog in the White House, his daughter Maria's pet spaniel. The presence of FDOTUS - First Dog Of The United States - really took off with Warren G. Harding whose Airedale Terrier Laddie Boy became a personality in his own right from 1921 to 1923. He was photographed in the Press and birthday parties were held for him. When Harding played golf, Laddie Boy would retrieve wayward shots.

In 1954 the television series debuted and ran for 19 years, featuring Pal's descendants in the lead role. 29. What breed of dog was Barry, the famous nineteenth century Swiss mountain rescue dog?

From Quiz Every Dog Has His Day

Answer: St Bernard

Barry actually predates the official name of the breed. The Great St Bernard Hospice had begun to selectively breed a dog for rescue work in the mountains in the 17th century. Barry, who was born in 1800, was a lighter build than the breed today and the dogs were often called Kuherhunds (cowherds' dog). After his death in 1814 the breed was referred to as 'Barry hounds' until 1965 when they were officially named the St Bernard. Barry is known to have saved at least 40 lives, urban legend has it that he died on his 41st rescue but this is untrue. He retired at the age of 12 to live out his retirement with a monk where he lived for another 2 years. One dog at the hospice has always been called Barry in his honour since and when a foundation was set up in 2004 to take over the breeding of the dogs it was named 'Foundation Barry du Grand Saint Bernard'.

30. If my Uncle Hubert was complaining that his "dogs" hurt, to what kind of doctor should I suggest he go see?
