Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2010, the United States was the only industrialized country who had not completely converted to the Metric System. How agonizing would it be to convert "feet" into meters? First you need to know this: how many meters are there in a foot?

Answer: 0.3048 meters

If you multiply the number of feet you need to convert by 0.3048, you get the measurement in meters. The U.S.A. attempted to adopt the metric system back in 1975. We went so far as to establish a 'United States Metric Board' for the transition; but by the early 1980s, the only progress made was that liquor had to be labeled in liters. We tried again in 1988, when Congress decided that government agencies must try to become metric by 1992. Today, the Department of Defense and NASA are becoming close to being fully converted; while others, like the Department of Education, are still fighting it.

They've cited the "rights of each state to make its own decision".
2. Do adult humans' feet keep 'growing' with age?

Answer: Feet do not 'grow', but appear longer and wider from loss of muscle and connective tissue.

As strange as it may seem, human feet do tend to expand as we age; our arches break down and the foot bones spread out. So, technically they're expanding, not growing. A half size expansion is typical.
3. The word 'centipede' comes from the Latin words 'centi', which means a hundred, and 'pedis', meaning feet. Do all centipedes have one hundred 'feet'?

Answer: No

While the name seems to suggest centipedes do have one hundred feet, they can have any number of legs from lower than twenty to over three hundred; but they usually have an odd number of pairs of legs, say 47 or 49 pairs (94 or 98 legs). The do not have even pairs like 50.
4. The vocal group Parliament had a song entitled "The Agony of De Feet". What's the missing word from the following lyrics? "Are you any kin to Dr. Scholl's, you've got some funny looking ____."

Answer: toes

An African-American vocal group featuring funk and soul music, Parliament was based in Plainfield, NJ. They were somewhat popular in the 1970s.
5. Most of us know there are 5280 feet in a statute mile, but do you know approximately how many feet there are in the International Nautical Mile?

Answer: 6076 feet

The International Nautical Mile, which is used for sea and air navigation, is equal to the length of one minute of arc of a great circle of the Earth. The great circle of Earth theorizes that Earth is a perfect sphere, so that by averaging one minute of arc at the equator and the polar planes, the results are at 1852 meters. This is equal to 6076.11549 feet.
6. What is it called if someone has a significant sexual interest in feet or footwear?

Answer: podophilia

Neurologists have offered that 'foot fetishism' might be caused by possible communication between neighboring feet and genital sensory areas in the brain. Pedophilia is when an adult is sexually attracted to a child; podiatry is the study and treatment of foot disorders; and pedagogy is the art or science of teaching.
7. Some people are born with a total of twelve toes on their feet. Which of the following is NOT a word used to describe someone with six toes on each foot?

Answer: sexytoesis

This condition is more common in humans than one would think; it occurs in one of every 1,000 live births. Serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter from the "Silence of the Lambs" is one of the more famous fictional examples of this condition.
8. This movie won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2006. It featured dancing penguins, and subtly conveyed an important environmental message. What was the title of this movie?

Answer: Happy Feet

Also nominated that year were "Cars" and "Monster House". "Happy Feet" was directed by George Miller, Warren Coleman, and Judy Morris.
9. "I wish that I had duck feet. And I can tell you why. You can splash around in duck feet. You don't have to keep them dry." Which favorite author of children's books wrote "I Wish That I Had Duck Feet"?

Answer: Dr. Seuss

In 1965, Theodor Seuss Geisel used the pen name "Theo. LeSieg" when he wrote this book about a little boy who tries out various interesting body parts and finally decides he's okay just the way he is.
10. Way back in 1912, who saw the need for more focus on foot care and founded the Illinois College of Chiropody and Orthopedics?

Answer: William Scholl

William Scholl was working in a shoe store, where he witnessed the various foot problems that customers were having. He decided to enroll in medical school and study foot structure to hopefully help people suffering from foot pain. Dr. Scholl's foot products have been manufactured ever since.
