Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Disney animated classic featured the song "Whistle While You Work"?

Answer: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

The song was written specifically for the 1937 movie, Disney's first full-length animated feature. It was sung by Snow White as she cleaned the dwarfs' cottage. Allusions to the song have been included in other Disney works, including "Disney Sing-Along Songs".
2. What term describes someone who exposes illegal or dishonest activity?

Answer: Whistle-blower

The term whistle-blower refers to a referee's whistle; in various sports, a referee might blow a whistle to signal a foul or a penalty. It is said to have been first applied to the situation of an informant by American politician Ralph Nader in the 1970s.

A whistle-blower usually reveals the dishonest activities of the company or organization he or she works for, and often does so anonymously out of fear of reprisal. Many countries have laws protecting whistle-blowers.
3. Which of these animals, associated with a particular day of the year, is also called a whistle-pig?

Answer: Groundhog

Found across North America, the groundhog is scientifically known as Marmota monax. In addition to whistle-pig, it is also sometimes called a woodchuck. The animal sometimes emits a high-pitched whistle noise as a warning call to the rest of the colony when danger is present.

In Canada and the US, February 2 is Groundhog Day; on this day, whether or not a groundhog sees its shadow is supposed to predict whether there will be an early spring or not.
4. At some fast food restaurants, such as A&W, you can order a Whistle Dog. This is a hot dog with what on it?

Answer: Bacon and cheese

A&W is a fast food restaurant chain. In Canada, where the chain has been operated completely separately by another company from the American restaurants since the 1970s, the restaurant is known for its brand of root beer as well as the "burger family"; most of their burgers carry the name of a family member, such as Grandpa Burger, Mama Burger or Teen Burger. Hot dogs are another item on the menu at many locations, including regular hot dogs as well as the bacon-and-cheese topped Whistle Dog.
5. The whistle register is the highest register of the human voice.

Answer: True

The whistle register is indeed the highest phonational register, coming in above falsetto on the human vocal register. Vocal fry is the lowest register and modal (regular speaking voice) is above that. With training, most female singers are able to sing within the whistle register, but few males can.

Many operatic soprano parts include singing within the whistle register; in mainstream music, Mariah Carey is an example of someone who uses the whistle register.
6. In 2012, which of these performers had a number one hit with the single "Whistle"?

Answer: Flo Rida

Rapper Flo Rida had a hit with "Whistle", a single from his fourth album "Wild Ones". The song was number one in the US on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and did well on charts in other countries as well. It received some mixed reviews from critics; on the one hand, most consider the tune to be very catchy but the song has also been criticized for very suggestive and not at all subtle lyrics.

The song was performed by "Glee" cast members in a fourth season episode of the show.
7. At which Winter Olympic Games were many events held at the world famous resort town of Whistler?

Answer: 2010 Vancouver

Whistler is a resort town in British Columbia, Canada, home to the famous Whistler-Blackcomb ski resort. Vancouver, one of Canada's largest cities, is located a bit south of Whistler. Vancouver hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, and Whistler was co-host/"host mountain resort" of the Games. Events held in Whistler included alpine skiing, luge, skeleton and bobsled.
8. According to a folksy saying, what are you doing if you're 'whistling Dixie'?

Answer: Engaging in fanciful daydreaming

American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language's definition of whistling Dixie is "engaging in unrealistically rosy fantasizing". The term comes from an American song made popular in the 1850s at blackface minstrel shows, "Dixie" or "I Wish I Was in Dixie". Dixie is a term for the South (of the United States).

The song's lyrics speak of a freed slave wishing he was back 'home' on the cotton plantation. Because of its association with songs and sentiments like this, the term 'Dixie' is considered by some to be offensive and politically incorrect, while others embrace it as part of Southern tradition and heritage.
9. The song "I Whistle a Happy Tune" comes from which Broadway show?

Answer: The King and I

"The King and I" is a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that debuted on Broadway in 1951. In the musical, main character Anna goes to Siam to teach the children (the many, many children) of the King of Siam. "I Whistle a Happy Tune" is the show's first song, sung by Anna to her son, who is fearful of the move to Siam.

The musical was based on the book "Anna and the King of Siam" by Margaret Landon, which itself was based on the memoirs of the real life Anna Leonowens.
10. If you are in Ontario, Canada and have bought a Steam Whistle, what do you have?

Answer: Beer

Steam Whistle is a brewing company based in Toronto that opened in 2000. It was started by three guys who used to work for the Upper Canada Brewing Company and lost their jobs when it was bought by Sleeman. The beer is widely available throughout Ontario and the company is gradually expanding into the rest of Canada. It won a Golden Tap award in 2004 for being the best beer in Toronto.
