Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Did you know that it was not originally called the Declaration of Independence?

When the Continental Congress first appointed a committee to draft a statement justifying American independence, it was referred to as a "Declaration by the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress assembled." It wasn't until the final version was adopted on July 4th that it became known as the Declaration of Independence.

As an interesting note, Richard Stockton of New Jersey was one of the signers of the Declaration, but he paid a heavy price for his support of independence. In November 1776, he was captured by the British and imprisoned in New York City, where he was subjected to harsh treatment and eventually released in 1777 after his health had been severely damaged. Despite this, he continued to serve in Congress and helped to draft the New Jersey State Constitution in 1776.
