Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This word starts and ends with the same two letters: A toy on a string, which goes up and down (and in other directions if you can do advanced tricks).

Answer: yoyo

Toys similar to yo-yos were used by Native Americans about 3000 years ago, and by Greeks about 2500 years ago! The word yo-yo is of Filipino origin.
2. This word starts and ends with the same two letters: City in Florida, home to the Heat, Marlins, and Dolphins.

Answer: Miami

The Miami Heat play in the National Basketball Association. The Miami Dolphins (National Football League) and Florida Marlins (National League of Major League Baseball) play in the same stadium (Dolphin Stadium, formerly Joe Robbie Stadium, Pro Player Stadium, etc.).
3. This word starts and ends with the same two letters: To make bare or remove all coverings.

Answer: denude

Not surprisingly, denude comes from the same Latin root as nude! In some words, the prefix "de" carries a connotation of negating the word; but in "denude" it is more of an emphasis.
4. This word starts and ends with the same two letters: American term for item used to remove markings (especially pencils).

Answer: eraser

In Britain, they're called rubbers. The inadvertent discovery in 1770 that the material we now call "rubber" could be used to rub out pencil marks was what led to the application of the word "rubber" to that material.
5. This word starts and ends with the same two letters: Adjective referring to the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Answer: carioca

Carioca is the Portuguese adjective referring to the city of Rio de Janeiro. Interestingly, the adjective referring to the state of Rio de Janeiro is "fluminense".
6. This word starts and ends with the same two letters: The wife of Odysseus.

Answer: Penelope

Penelope waited faithfully for the hero to return from his great adventure. One of the subplots of "The Odyssey" relates the various schemes Penelope undertakes to delay her many suitors while she awaits the return of her husband.
7. This word starts and ends with the same two letters: Fifth most populous city in Spain, capital of Aragon.

Answer: zaragoza

Zaragoza (also spelled Saragossa) dates back to Punic times, and has been captured repeatedly, by Romans, then Moors, then Aragon. The city's population is now about 700,000.
8. This word starts and ends with the same two letters: Native language of an island in the North Atlantic.

Answer: icelandic

The Icelandic language is most closely related to Norwegian and Faroese. The oldest preserved Icelandic texts are about 900 years old; the language appears to have changed little since the thirteenth century.
9. This word starts and ends with the same two letters: Adjective describing the continent that contains the South Pole. Careful: We're looking here for the slightly nonstandard version of the more normal adjective (which wouldn't fit the rules of this quiz).

Answer: antarctican

Antarctic is the more common version of this adjective, but Antarctican means the same thing (and fits the pattern for this quiz!).
10. This word starts and ends with the same two letters: Ancient (literally, before the flood)

Answer: antediluvian

"Ante" means "before".
The term is used figuratively to mean ancient, or literally to refer to the events that happened before the great flood of Noah described in Genesis.

I hope you've enjoyed this quiz.
As you may have noticed, this quiz only gives the number of letters in the answer as a hint. My first quiz like this also gave the repeating letters as a hint.
Please feel free to let me know which way you prefer, and I'll keep that in mind when I make more quizzes like this.
