Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the term for a woman with a special place in your heart?

Answer: Girlfriend

According to etymologists, the term used to describe the mistress of a man, or a woman who is a close friend of another in the 17th century was "she-friend". They have traced the word "girlfriend" to 1859 when it started to be used to describe a young woman's female friend. By 1922, the word had begun to be used to describe the woman with whom a man was romantically involved.

In the 21st century, it can be used to describe a female friend of a man or a woman (not romantically connected with either), the romantic partner of a man or a woman, or it can refer to a person of any sex or sexuality in LGBT communities.
2. Who were the armed entertainers in Ancient Rome?

Answer: Gladiators

Gladiators were fighters in Ancient Rome who usually specialized in a type of armour, a type of weapon, or a type of fighting technique. The popular fights between gladiators were held in publicly available venues. The official gladiator fights were held from 105 BCE to 404 CE. Typically, gladiator fights ended when one killed the opponent.

This meant that they had a relatively short lifespan, so they were usually slaves, former slaves or condemned prisoners. When we think of gladiators, we often think of men, but it should be noted that women fought as gladiators until it was outlawed by Septimius Severus in 200 CE.
3. Who are the male drivers of trash collection trucks?

Answer: Garbageman

The history of garbagemen is actually quite fascinating. In 3,000 BCE, Knossos, Crete dug one of the first garbage dumps. It was a large pit where garbage could be placed and layered with dirt. In 500 BCE, Athens, Greece passed a law that garbage must be dumped at least one mile from the city.

In the mid-1300s during the Black Plague, England introduced the first real garbagemen. They were called "rakers" because at that time, people would simply toss their garbage on their lawns and have these men rake it up and haul it away once a week. Trash collecting remained a very manual labour until the 1920s when specialized vehicles with hydraulic compressors arrived on the market. The garbage trucks have remained very similar to those first models. Now, garbagemen don't even need to exit their trucks to load the garbage in many communities. The newer trucks are designed with a "grabber" that reaches out, grabs the trash bin, and dumps it into the back of the truck, eliminating the need for a person to dump a garbage can into the back of the truck.
4. What is the branch of medicine that deals with women's reproductive organs?

Answer: Gynecology

Gynecology is the branch of medicine that specializes in the care of women during pregnancy and childbirth. It is also the branch of medicine that specializes is the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases of women's reproductive systems. Gynecologists also specialize in other women's health issues, including menopause, hormone problems, contraception (birth control), and infertility.

These doctors are also often called an ob/gyn.
5. If someone is bowing deeply while touching one knee to the ground, what term can be used to describe what he or she does?

Answer: Genuflects

A person who genuflects is one who briefly bends low and touches one knee to the ground. It is usually seen during worship ceremonies, or as a sign of respect. For example, a priest may genuflect before the pope. This action represents a show of servility or deep respect.

The word genuflect came to us in the 17th century from two words in Latin. The word "genu" means "knee", and "flectere" means "to bend".
6. What is the name often used for someone who is afraid of germs?

Answer: Germaphobe

A germaphobe, or germophobe, is a person with an extreme fear of germs, or an obsession with cleanliness. The word seems to have come together from the words "germ" and "phobia" in the late 19th century. However, it was rarely used until the end of the 20th century when the use of the word rose dramatically. Comedian Howie Mandel and talk-show host Howard Stern are self-confessed germaphobes.

Other famous suspected germaphobes include Donald Trump, Howard Hughes, and Nicola Tesla.
7. What is a type of gum disease?

Answer: Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a type of gum disease that causes swelling and redness of the gums. The swelling is usually the result of a reaction to the formation of plaque on the teeth. Gingivitis may lead to more a serious gum disease called periodontitis that can cause the teeth to fall out, so it is important to watch for the main signs of gingivitis.

These include swollen and tender or painful gums, bleeding gums, and bad breath. If these signs appear, it is recommended that you see a dentist as soon as possible to prevent the progression of gum disease into something more serious.
8. What position in soccer or ice hockey plays in front of the net?

Answer: Goalkeeper

When playing both ice hockey and soccer, a team works together on offence to get a ball or a puck into the other team's net. The defending team tries to stop that from happening with plays on the field or the ice, and by placing a guard in front of the net to stop shots taken by the other team. The guard is known as the goalkeeper or goaltender.
9. Who is the children's book character who met the three bears?

Answer: Goldilocks

"Goldilocks and the Three Bears" (originally titled "The Story of the Three Bears") written by Robert Southey was published in 1837. This British author's version of the story is the first of a few different versions. It features an old woman who breaks into the bears' cottage, not a young girl called "Goldilocks".

In 1849, Joseph Cundall published the story, but instead of an old woman, the young female character was "Silver-Hair". Although the story remained basically the same with successive publications, the girl's name changed to "Little Silver Hair", "Silver-Locks", "Silverhair", "Golden Hair", and "Little Golden-Hair" before becoming "Goldilocks" when it was published in "Old Nursery Stories and Rhymes" in 1904.
10. What is the official ceremony that is held to recognize the completion of an academic credential?

Answer: Graduation

A graduation ceremony is a formal event where a person who has completed a course of study at school, college, or university officially receives the credential that they have earned. The word graduation can also mean the mark on a container that indicates quantity. The word comes from the Latin "gradus" which means "a step climbed" or "a degree of something rising by stages".
