Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a name for a franchised business where cars are sold and serviced?

Answer: Dealership

A car dealership is usually a franchised business that stocks new cars for sale that are typically made by a particular company. Dealerships also sell used cars that may or may not be of the same brand as their new cars. Used cars are stocked from trade-ins for new cars, as well as from auctions where the car dealer goes to get stock. Dealerships usually have a service department where specialized service for their car models can be offered, as well as any warranty work on their car models. Dealerships usually also have a parts department where customers can purchase parts for cars that they sell even if the cars are being serviced elsewhere.
2. If an object moves from the upper corner of a square to the opposite lower corner, in which direction has it moved?

Answer: Diagonally

The word "diagonally" refers to a line that is not horizontal or vertical. Instead, it is one that moves in a straight line to join opposite corners of a polygon. Diagonally is an adverb that comes from the noun "diagonal". The word diagonal comes from the ancient Greek word "dagonios". That meant "from angle to angle". Ancient scholars like Euclid used the word to describe a line that connects two vertices of a cuboid or a rhombus.

The Romans developed the Latin word "diagonus" from the Greeks. It means "slanting line" in Latin.
3. What is another name for a longshoreman?

Answer: Dockworker

A dockworker is someone whose job is to load and unload ships in ports. Dockworkers are also known as dock workers, longshoremen, and stevedores. This manual job was vital in the history of ports, rail yards, and airports, but once shipping containers became the norm in the 1960s, there was a 90% drop in the number of dockworkers employed at most ports because goods were simply packed into the shipping containers and loaded by cranes.

There was no longer a need for as many dockworkers to carry the freight piece-by-piece at the ports.
4. What is the name of this tropical fish? It is the little __________. (It's very small compared to its mythical monster cousin.)

Answer: Dragonfish

The little dragonfish or short dragonfish (Eurypegasus draconis) is a tropical fish that grows up to 10 cm (3.9 in). This fish is in the Pegasidae family, named after Pegasus, the winged horse from ancient Greek mythology. It features long wing-like pectoral fins, and a long flattened head that resembles a snout.

This fish lives in tropical waters in Southeast Asia. The little dragonfish sheds its skin in one piece and is very popular for traditional medicine in China and Hong Kong.
5. What are these weeds that many try to eradicate from their lawns?

Answer: Dandelions

The dandelion plant is considered a weed in many areas. However, all parts of the plant are edible, so can be cooked, or eaten in salads. I have made dandelion syrup and dandelion cake from these delicious plants. Care needs to be taken when harvesting to ensure that only plants that have not been treated with herbicides or pesticides are ingested.
6. Who was the headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when Harry Potter arrived for his first term?

Answer: Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore was the headmaster at Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series of books. He takes Harry under his wing because Harry's parents were killed when he was very young. Dumbledore provides guidance and protection for the boy wizard and his friends as Harry learns about the world of magic.
7. What is the learning disability that causes problems with written expression?

Answer: Dysgraphia

Dysgraphia is a learning disability that affects the ability to write using a pen or pencil. It is typically noticed when a child is first introduced to writing in school. People with dysgraphia usually experience difficulty with some fine motor skills such as tying shoes, zipping zippers, and using some utensils at meals.

One sign of dysgraphia is the inability to keep a uniform size and shape of letters while writing if those with the disability are unable to constantly look at their writing. They also confuse similar-looking letters such as f and t, p and q, or b and d. Sometimes those with dysgraphia write an incorrect word when they try to write their thoughts down. It may appear as though there is a disconnect between the thought-processing and the motor skill centres in the brain. There are some treatments for younger children such as occupational therapy, or teaching cursive writing to encourage writing flow.
8. What is the hair style that is associated with the Rastafari movement?

Answer: Dreadlocks

In modern times, many think of dreadlocks being related to the Rastafari movement. However, there is evidence from frescoes that were discovered in Greece that dreadlocks were worn around 1600-1500 BCE. There are also examples of dreadlocks on Ancient Egyptian wigs that have been found at archeological sites.

In modern day, various cultures have been known to wear dreadlocks. These include Australian Aborigines, Maasai warriors, some Buddhists, some who practice Hinduism, and sports and entertainment celebrities.
9. What do you find in a dictionary, one for each word? Side note - "dictionary" is another fine ten-letter "D" word. ;-)

Answer: Definition

A dictionary is a fine place to go to check out new words, along with a definition of each. The word "definition" comes to us from the Latin verb "definire", which means "set bounds to". That word became "definition" in late Middle English. The word "definition" has two meanings - an exact meaning of a word, and a distinct outline of an image.
10. What is a noun that means to change something out of its true state, sometimes caused by reflections on a mirror or windows if viewed from an odd angle?

Answer: Distortion

Distortion is defined as changing something so that it is no longer accurate, or a change in how something looks, sounds, or acts that results in it becoming difficult to recognize. According to etymologists, the word distortion comes from the Latin word "distorquere" which means "to twist different ways".

The word "distortion" was first used in English in the late 1500s. Examples of distortion include odd reflections like the one in the photo, voices underwater sounding different than on land, melting crayons, and altering sound waveforms to produce different noises in signal processing.
