Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A statement of money owed for goods or services + Used to shoot an arrow

Answer: Bilbo

Bill + Bow

Bilbo Baggins was a Hobbit from the Shire. He is best known as the 'Hobbit that left the Shire' because he went on a journey and returned with the Ring of Power. His adventures are the basis of the book "The Hobbit." His young cousin Frodo eventually destroyed the Ring and became legendary among his peers.

Bilbo has no meaning in Hobbitish - it is just a common male name. Baggins is an old English expression meaning 'one who eats between meals' which is very apt. He is also known as Bilba Labingi, Barrel-rider, Mr Lucky Number, Child of the Kindly West and, commonly, Mad Baggins.
2. Elevated railway + Finish of race + Not well

Answer: Elendil

El + End + Ill

Elendil was a Numenorean Man of Gondor. His name means 'elf-friend' and 'lover of stars" in Quenya. He was given the surname Voronda which means 'steadfast' or 'faithful' after he remained loyal to the elves throughout Sauron's dominance of Numenor.

At over 7-foot tall, he was also known as Elendil the Tall and, later, as High King of the United Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor which he founded with his sons.
3. A long way to go + A Muslim leader

Answer: Faramir

Far + Emir

Faramir was a Noble Man of Gondor. He is the younger brother of Boromir, one of the Fellowship of the Ring.

His name means 'sufficient jewel' and his honourable ways led to him becoming the Captain of Gondor beneath his father the Steward. When his father died he became the Steward of Gondor under King Aragorn. He also becomes the Prince of Ithilien after the War of the Ring.
4. Slang term for a girl + To total numbers together + Lively Scottish dance

Answer: Galadriel

Gal + Add + Reel

Galadriel was a Noldrin Elf known as the Lady of Lothorien, The Lady of the Golden Wood, White Lady and Lady of the Light prior to her leaving the Undying Lands.

Galadriel was called Artanis by her father which is Quenya for 'shining and radiant.' This is the equivalent to the name Galadriel which is a Sindarin name with the same meaning. This has led to the belief that her husband, Celeborn, gave her this version of her name.

Her mother named her Nerwen which means 'man-maiden' in Quenyan. This is referencing her height of over six foot and great physical strength. Other names also include Altariel and Alatariel.

Galadriel defied the Valar by coming to Middle-earth to find the Silmarils. She receives redemption in the end as she rejected the One Ring and is allowed to return to the Undying Lands.
5. US Uncle + Prudent and smart

Answer: Samwise

Sam + Wise

Samwise was a Hobbit from the Shire who was a member of the Fellowship. He belonged to the Gamgee family in Hobbiton. He was a staunch supporter and best friend of Frodo and followed him all the way to Mount Doom.

Samwise is an Old English name meaning 'half-wise', he was also called Perhael which means the same in Sindarin. In Hobbitish it is translated to Banazir Galbasi. Frodo referred to him as 'Samwise the Stouthearted' and he was also the Mayor of the Shire for 55 years. In the Fourth Age Aragorn awarded him the name Panthael - Sindarin for 'full-wise.'
6. Danish building blocks + Scottish girl

Answer: Legolas

Lego + Lass

Legolas was a Wood Elf from Mirkwood. He is an Elf Prince and a member of the Fellowship of the Ring. He becomes a close friend of Aragorn throughout the series.

His name comes from both Silvan and Sindarin roots. 'Leg' means 'green' in Silvan; 'las' meaning 'leaf' or 'golas' meaning 'collection of leaves' in Sindarin. So his name means 'greenleaf' or 'greenleaves'. He is sometimes called Legolas Greenleaf which is redundant as they are quite literally naming him Greenleaf Greenleaf.
7. Warning in golf + A considerable duration in time

Answer: Forlong

Fore + Long

Forlong was a Man of Gondor who was Lord of Lossarnach during the War of the Ring. He was very old by this time but still amassed an army of 200 men and led them to assist Minus Tirith where he was killed battle.

His name is from Pre-Numenorean times and its meaning isn't known. He is however also known as 'Forlong the Fat' and 'Forlong the Old'. These were meant as a compliment from his constituents referring to his bravery at such a late stage in his life.
8. For each + Ovum + Big Smile

Answer: Peregrin

Per + Egg + Grin

Peregrin Took, known as Pippin, was another Hobbit of the Shire. He joined the Fellowship at only 28 and loyally followed Frodo on the quest to destroy the One Ring. He became Thain of the Shire at the death of his father and was later rewarded by Aragorn for his courage by being named Counsellor of the North-Kingdom of Arnor.

Peregrin may come from Peregrine meaning 'traveller, foreigner, pilgrim or wandering' while Pippin means someone who is well known for being courageous. His Hobbitish name is Razanur Tuk. Gandalf was also known to call him the 'Fool of a Took.'
9. 50 in Roman numerals + Something done in response to a challenge + Charged atom

Answer: Eldarion

L + Dare + Ion

Eldarion was another Man of Gondor. As the son of Aragorn and Arwen he was half-man and half-elven. His name means 'Son of Eldar' in Quenya. The Eldar were Elvish people whose name means 'people of the stars.'

He was the heir of Aragorn and he accompanied his father to the House of Kings and his death. Aragorn passed the kingship of both Gondor and Arnor to him. Eladrion is said to have ruled the reunited Kingdom for 'at least one hundred generations of men'.

He is not actually mentioned in the LOTR trilogy. Tolkien wrote six appendices which outline the history and fates of some of the characters. Some publications of "The Fellowship of the Ring" contain these works while others were published posthumously. He considered Appendix A, which includes "The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen," to be of importance to the overall enjoyment of the trilogy.
10. Thin metal blade with teeth + Not off

Answer: Sauron

Saw + On

Sauron was a Maiar of Aule who served Morgoth - the great and evil Dark Lord of Arda during the First Age. After Morgoth was defeated Sauron himself became known as the Dark Lord himself. He came into being before the creation of the world and remained until he was finally defeated in the beginning of the Third Age.

Sauron comes from Thaura meaning 'detest' and primitive elvish meaning 'The Abhorred." He was also called The Necromancer, Annatar, The Lord of Gifts and The Power of the Black Land.

And we cannot pass the greatest of them, he created the One Ring to Rule them all which makes him - The Lord of the Rings.
