Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Anna journeys to save her sister after her sister freezes the fountain at their castle and other bodies of water in a fit of panic.

Answer: Frozen

In "Frozen", Princess Elsa has powers with ice and snow that she tries to suppress after injuring her sister Anna when they were young. The sisters are isolated from Arendelle in their castle until Elsa's coronation, after her parents die at sea. Elsa, agitated by her sister's rashly formed relationship, accidentally freezes the fountain and flees.

The most iconic song of the franchise, "Let It Go", sees Elsa embracing her power and declaring that she must live on her own to keep Arendelle safe. Nonetheless, Anna pursues her and, after rescuing Anna from danger, Elsa discovers the key to controlling her water-based powers.
2. A young girl is constantly drawn to the ocean despite her father's insistence that she become the next chief of her island village.

Answer: Moana

Moana tries to grow up to be the next chief of her island-bound tribe, like her father Tui wants her to be, but in "How Far I'll Go" she confesses that she cannot ignore the call of the sea. She is gently encouraged to follow her dreams by her grandmother Tala and sets sail after her death.

Moana meets the demigod Maui from Hawaiian mythology, who can shapeshift into many animal forms. She manages to return the heart of Te Fiti, goddess of nature, and restore her community's practice of wayfinding, embarking on the voyaging lifestyle she always desired.
3. A young girl makes a deal with the witch Ursula to escape the ocean, that her father King Triton rules.

Answer: The Little Mermaid

Ariel of "The Little Mermaid" is the reverse of Moana: she seeks to live on land to escape her father, King Triton's, overbearing demands on her. She makes a deal with Ursula, the sea witch, that she can live as a human if she receives a true love's kiss within three days. However, for those three days she loses her voice - traditionally what allows a mermaid to seduce sailors.

The film is based on the fairytale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen of 1837. There were plans for a Disney adaptation dating back to the 1930s, but with a 1989 release it became the first film in the Disney Renaissance. This was a decade of musical adaptations of classic stories whose success allowed Disney to escape its financial problems.
4. Experiment 626 cannot float in water so its creator tries to capture it when it goes surfing with the girl who has adopted it as a pet.

Answer: Lilo & Stitch

Experiment 626 - "Stitch" - is a genetic experimentation designed to cause destruction, despite its innocent appearance and goofy behavior. It escapes to Hawaii, where Lilo is living with her older sister Nani.

The criminal mastermind who designed Stitch, Dr. Jumba, knows that its one weakness is water. He tries to hijack a surfing trip of Lilo and Stitch by pulling Stitch underwater, but Nani's boyfriend manages to rescue the pair. Stitch and Lilo continue to bond and are eventually allowed to live together.
5. A four-sided snowflake symbolizes the spirits of earth, fire, water and air that lead Elsa to a memory of her mother.

Answer: Frozen II

A real snowflake has rotational symmetry of order six, but the "Frozen II" snowflake has rotational symmetry of order four. Elsa wakes the elemental spirits after hearing a voice calling to her: the wind spirit Gale is a tornado; the fire spirit Bruni is a salamander; the earth spirit Jötunn is a giant. Elsa connects most with the water spirit Nøkk, who resembles a horse that she can ride and who takes her to Ahtohallan.

The "Frozen" franchise combines fairytale with myth through the sisters Anna (fairytale princess) and Elsa (mythic hero). In "Frozen II", Elsa is called to action on a mythic quest to reunite with a memory of her mother. An indigenous forest community, based on the Sami people, are introduced as part of her maternal ancestry.

Elsa discovers she is a fifth spirit, physically embodying the bridge between the Arendelle Kingdom (fairytale) and the indigenous Northuldran people (myth). She ends the conflict between them by righting a great wrong that the Arendelle people constructed - a dam that interfered with the Northuldran magic.
6. A character hallucinates pink elephants after drinking from what they think is a barrel of water.

Answer: Dumbo

Dumbo - from "dumb" - is an elephant who acquires his humiliating nickname from the other elephants who bully him in the circus. He trips over his own ears, causing a disaster, and is used in a dangerous clown stunt from then on. After the stunt, the clowns drink champagne, some of which spills into a barrel of water. Dumbo hallucinates a frightening musical scene based on the phrase "seeing pink elephants". Dumbo eventually learns to fly, with the help of the mouse Timothy, and achieves fame and success.

"Dumbo" was produced during World War II as an adaptation of a children's book. It faced disruption when animation workers went on striking, citing working hours well in excess of 40 hours per week, different pay for people performing the same work, and lack of on-screen credits. The film portrays African-Americans in a similar manner to racist minstrel shows, with one crow named after the racist term "Jim Crow".
7. Captain Hook falls into the water after losing a duel.

Answer: Peter Pan

In perhaps the most iconic scene of the 1953 Disney film, Peter Pan arrives to rescue several children who are forced to walk the plank by Captain Hook. The pirate falls into water and flees with the crocodile.

Based on books and plays by J. M. Barrie, Peter Pan is a boy who refuses to grow up and lives in Neverland. Walt Disney watched the play in his childhood and was keen to adapt it. His company was taken over by the U.S. government for war propaganda and military training purposes during World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, delaying the production.
8. In the Great Barrier Reef, a father searches for his son.

Answer: Finding Nemo

Marlin is a clownfish who loses his son Nemo to a team of scuba divers. Ironically, it is Marlin's protectiveness over Nemo that causes him to run away, as Marlin is still traumatised by a barracuda attack that left Nemo's egg as the only surviving offspring of him and his wife. Much like in "Frozen", "Moana" and "The Little Mermaid", a parent finds that he cannot quash his child's freedom without consequence.

While Marlin and Nemo are clownfish, Dory (who stars in the sequel "Finding Dory") is a blue tang who suffers amnesia. The animators studied oceanography through visiting aquaria and diving in Hawaii to ensure that the fishes were animated realistically.
9. This film was based on a water attraction at Disneyland.

Answer: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride at Disneyland, California, was the last ride made with the personal involvement of Walt Disney, who did not live to see it open in 1967. Riders travel along a boat in the dark and see the story of a band of West Indies pirates. The location Dead Man's Cove and the theme song "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)" are two of the most iconic features.

The first film adaptation of the ride came in 2003 with "The Curse of the Black Pearl", starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. He seeks to rescue a kidnapped lady from a crew that are trying to escape a curse brought on by stealing Aztec gold.
10. Water is seemingly nowhere to be found on the barren, trash-riddled Earth that one Waste Allocation Load Lifter is assigned to.

Answer: WALL-E

In "WALL-E", the title character is a robot designed to compact trash on Earth, but who has a sentimentality towards human objects like Rubik's Cubes, light bulbs and a clip of humans dancing to the song "Put on Your Sunday Clothes".

WALL-E finds a tiny plant beginning to grow and presents it to a robot he encounters, EVE, who takes it to a ship where the remaining humans live in gluttony. The captain takes the plant and waters it, remarking "you came a long way for a drink of water".

"WALL-E" has environmental themes, reminding us that it is our job to take care of the planet we live on as well as ourselves. Through the megacorporation Buy n Large, whose CEO is effectively president of the world, it warns against the monopoly and undemocratic power that capitalism produces.
